And now the House

And now the House. Monday, May 10, 2010. What to do with our Old Walls? Compared with the cottage, the house renovation has been so easy. We have the wonderful Monsieur B as our project manager and when we have any concerns we speak to him and he sorts it. To keep within budget, we limited what the builders and artisans would do for us. One job we thought we could manage ourselves would be painting the walls in the dining room and my study. And now the House: Wet, Wet, Wet

http://andnowthehouse.blogspot.com/2010/02/wet-wet-wet.html

And now the House. Monday, February 22, 2010. Wet, Wet, Wet. Saturday afternoon and yet again we've had an emergency water company engineer on site; this time up to his elbows in the manhole where the water meter sits. I thought about getting my camera and taking a picture of his bottom in the air, but it seemed rude to wander off and leave him when he was baling ice cold water as fast as he could so he could get at the problem. So we carried buckets and made small talk in French and English. We're seein...

And now the House: Slow Progress

http://andnowthehouse.blogspot.com/2009/12/slow-progress.html

And now the House. Sunday, December 6, 2009. Progress on the house is. Leisurely. Nothing like the rush and bustle of the Poles when they were doing the cottage. The French builders are all working on other projects, so they squeeze us in from time to time. Sometimes it's a bit like having elves on the project. We don't see anyone. There is no van parked in front of the house, and yet there is some small change. So when do they come and work? In the meantime we're snug in the cottage. Some of My Photos.

And now the House: We've Changed our Minds (Again)

http://andnowthehouse.blogspot.com/2010/01/weve-changed-our-minds-again.html

And now the House. Wednesday, January 6, 2010. We've Changed our Minds (Again). About what to do with the lounge back wall. Monsieur G (who is in charge of the major structural stuff) said the mud. In the lounge colombage was not salvageable and we agreed it would come out to be replaced with horizontal flat bricks and render. The big stones are now in place under the wooden beams and we'll have stone steps coming down into the lounge from the gite/entrance hall. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). We ha...

And now the House: Insulation

http://andnowthehouse.blogspot.com/2010/02/insulation.html

And now the House. Monday, February 1, 2010. Our first winter we struggled to keep any warmth in the house and finally bought special aluminium foil insulation and just rolled it onto the floor of the loft to give some sort of protection. We struggle to keep warm in cold weather because when we look up at the beams we see the bare wooden slats of the loft floor. In the days when the loft was used to store hay just having the bare boards was an excellent plan. The hay insulated the rooms below. We have fi...

And now the House: Plastering Progress

http://andnowthehouse.blogspot.com/2010/03/plastering-progress.html

And now the House. Monday, March 8, 2010. Monsieur C and his team have finished and the plastering looks great. Really sharp. And he worked so fast. He had a large machine that squeezed the plaster like toothpaste on to the wall and then giant-sized floats to smooth it out. The insulation is so thick, we've reduced the width of the kitchen by some twenty-seven centimetres and we've had to modify the design of the units along the wall under the new window. There may be a problem with. The painting can be ...

Location: (1) Dordogne, N21 coming into Bergerac from the south, junction with D660 towards Cahors and Sarlat (2) Bergerac town centre, south west side of Vieux Pont (old bridge). Found two splendid roundabouts in Bergerac. The second, on the south west side of the old bridge in the centre of Bergerac, is a fountain with leaping fish. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Unfortunately some of the artwork is ephemeral and may not still be there to see.

French Roundabouts: Memorial

http://frenchroundabouts-suej.blogspot.com/2009/11/memorial.html

Miniature works of municipal art. November 22, 2009. Location: Lot and Garonne, Marmande, D933, junction with D708. The D933 is now a smart new by-pass round the outskirts of Marmande, heading north towards Périgueux and Bergerac and South to Mount de Marsan. The recent construction has been an opportunity to build and design new roundabouts. One of the most dramatic, on the crossroads with the D708 that leads into Marmande town centre, is topped by this powerful sculpture in memory of the holocaust.

French Roundabouts: Tennis Club, Tonneins

Miniature works of municipal art. August 21, 2008. Tennis Club, Tonneins. Location: Tonneins, Lot and Garonne, tennis club, behind Leclerc, off N113. There is a tiny roundabout in front of the Tonneins tennis club, with an old-fashioned lamp post in the middle of delicate flowers and grasses. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Here are some of my favourites, at present mainly in the Lot and Garonne, but over time to be extended to all France. And now the House. What to do with our Old Walls?

French Roundabouts: November 2009

http://frenchroundabouts-suej.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Miniature works of municipal art. November 22, 2009. Les Vignobles de Marmande. Location: Lot and Garonne, on the Bordeaux side of Marmande, junction of the D933 with the D813. At the junction of the Mont de Marsan to Périgueux road (the new D933) and the Agen road (the D813) on the edge of Marmande, there is an imposing roundabout suitable for the entrance to a town that is proud of its wines. In the autumn the leaves on the vines have a golden hue, and the evergreens form an elegant backdrop. From some...

French Roundabouts: Strange "Spider"

http://frenchroundabouts-suej.blogspot.com/2009/10/strange-spider.html

Miniature works of municipal art. October 18, 2009. Location: Landes, D824, entrance to Dax ring road coming from Mont de Marsan. It isn't a spider, because it only has six legs. And what are the three phallic symbols in the middle all about? And I thought the red "D" with the swirl might be the logo for Dax, but it doesn't seem to be. Then round the other side of the roundabout there are about a dozen painted posts. All to be found on the ring road as you approach Dax from Mont de Marsan in the Landes.

La Petite Maison: The kitchen arrived ...

http://lamaisonette.blogspot.com/2009/05/kitchen-arrived.html

Friday, May 29, 2009. The kitchen arrived . At 930 this evening, just as the light was fading. The driver had phoned to say he had ". With the lorry, but would be with us. À tout à l'heure". He was on his own and told us he delivered his first kitchen at 8am this morning. Not sure how he would have got the fridge-freezer out of the lorry if Tod had not been here to help. The boxes are all stacked in the lounge and ready for the fitters' arrival on Wednesday. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

La Petite Maison: Kitchen Tiles

http://lamaisonette.blogspot.com/2009/06/kitchen-tiles.html

Tuesday, June 23, 2009. I'm really struggling with the kitchen tiles! Both of us liked them in the shop, but I had doubts when I took them down to the cottage and laid a few on the work surface. We (or rather I) spent a couple of days pondering and in the end I agreed. But now they are up, I think they will dominate the room too much. Tod says not to worry and they will be fine. I will just have to get used to them. October 18, 2011 at 12:55 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). And now the house.

La Petite Maison: Anticlimax

http://lamaisonette.blogspot.com/2009/08/anticlimax.html

Monday, August 10, 2009. These last few weeks have slipped away and still we're not quite finished. We've started cleaning the tiling; scrubbing off the grouting and render that leave a fine coating even after washing. All the windows and doors need varnishing. Some have a rough coat, but they need rubbing down and three new coats applied. The staircase needs oiling to protect it. And then there are two big tasks. The road needs to be relaid and finished after months of being churned up by heavy lorries.

And Now There Is Harley

Monday, September 7, 2009. 20 pounds lighter and a happy boy! Harley acquired this ball himself during garbage week, on one of his nightly walks with dad. In fact he brought home a couple before finding this one, and as this last one proved to be the best, the others were returned for recycling to any dog that wasn't as lucky as Harley was with his new prize. If he had his way this ball would go everywhere with him. Sunday, March 16, 2008. When we purchased our home, the former owner moved into a small a...
