http://www.justupthepike.com/2013/06/de-facto-segregation-threatens.html
Wednesday, June 26, 2013. De facto segregation threatens viability of MCPS. First in a series on segregation and academic equity in MCPS. Check out part TWO. Montgomery County Public Schools are often regarded as one of the best school systems in the nation, with schools routinely topping regional and national rankings. But as the county grows more diverse, MCPS is becoming a system of haves and have-nots. Low-income students and white students are each concentrated in separate MCPS high schools. Meanwhi...

just up the pike: nine years! (who could have imagined such a thing?)
http://www.justupthepike.com/2015/06/nine-years-who-could-have-imagined-such.html
Friday, June 26, 2015. Who could have imagined such a thing? I took this during that awesome sunset Tuesday night. Can you believe it? While the focus and style has changed, Just Up The Pike remains. I think of it as a member of my family now. This blog has survived college, graduate school, eight moves (including two out of state), and some thirteen jobs. To PechaKucha Night Silver Spring. This anniversary is particularly special because one of the first blog posts I wrote. Was about the Purple Line....

just up the pike: this was the view from the passenger seat . . .
http://www.justupthepike.com/2006/06/this-was-view-from-passenger-seat.html
Monday, June 26, 2006. This was the view from the passenger seat . . . Washington Post gallery of rainstorm pictures. Article about the rainstorm's effect on traffic. Bad on the Pike, and we've lived out here for over seven years - about when the traffic started getting bad, people say. Why is Route 29 the only road across the Northwest Branch? Instead, they should just build a much bigger bridge at Burnt Mills. The Northwest Branch hiker trail actually has an underpass at the existing bridge despite...

just up the pike: frequently asked questions
http://www.justupthepike.com/2008/01/frequently-asked-questions.html
Monday, January 28, 2008. A long-overdue list of questions and invitations to the bar I've received since beginning this blog six years ago. Feel free to submit more if you have any. 1) What is this called? One day, I will think of a less confusing name. In the meantime, this is Just Up The Pike. I lived "up the pike" - meaning Columbia Pike, or Route 29 - from Downtown Silver Spring, but not too far up, if you will. Thus, " Just. Up The Pike.". 2) What do you . . . do? Are you having a community meeting?

just up the pike: July 2015
http://www.justupthepike.com/2015_07_01_archive.html
Thursday, July 23, 2015. This map shows which parts of the DC area are really "urban" and "suburban". Where does the city start and end? Some might say its the District line. But in reality, the lines between city and suburb are more unclear than you think. Urban (blue) and suburban (green) parts of the DC area based on housing density. Map by the author. Click for a high-resolution version. I got into an argument with someone at a happy hour a few years ago. Why? We have tall buildings! One of the best ...

just up the pike: how alexandria's "courage wall" helped me find courage
http://www.justupthepike.com/2015/06/how-alexandrias-courage-wall-helped-me.html
Monday, June 15, 2015. How alexandria's "courage wall" helped me find courage. A chalkboard wall in Alexandria that recently got national attention for asking people to finish the thought "I wish I had the courage to ." is coming down. For me, the Courage Wall represented a moment when I took a courageous jump of my own. The Courage Wall in Alexandria. All photos by the author unless noted. Resident and leadership coach Nancy Belmont set up the wall. Even First Lady Michelle Obama tweeted about it. The C...

just up the pike: The Flower Theatre Project
http://www.justupthepike.com/p/the-flower-theatre-project.html
The Flower Theatre Project. The Flower Theatre today. Photo courtesy of Chip Py. Update: The Flower Theatre Project's on hold, at least for now. For years, the Flower Theatre in Long Branch has sat empty. How can we bring it back to life? I'd like to introduce the Flower Theatre Project, which seeks a socially and economically sustainable way to restore the Flower Theatre as an anchor for the Long Branch community and a catalyst for investment and revitalization. The Flower Theatre Project is still in it...

just up the pike: April 2015

Thursday, April 30, 2015. As silver spring urbanizes, neighbors disagree on who "belongs" in a civic association. Some members of a Silver Spring civic association recently tried to keep their new neighbors from joining. While residents rejected the measure, the fact that the issue got consideration at all illustrates how people disagree on who belongs in urbanizing communities. The new townhouses rise behind single-family homes in Seven Oaks-Evanswood. All photos by the author. To stop Chelsea Heights.
