Reflections from the margins. Why I bothered to learn Irish. In the early days I was surprised to find I had to justify myself a lot to people who think the language is worthless. I can’t tell you how many times I was asked ‘Why on earth would you want to learn Irish? 8217;, as if I had had some kind of breakdown and was retreating from the real world into the badlands of a distant past. The companion questions were ‘What is the point? 8217;, ‘What can you do with it? 8217; That is still on my list.
