Fire Ant Mechanics – AntPhysics

The Physics of Fire Ants. Fire ants behave like a fluid and like solid. In the first video we see a penny falling through a column of ants. This is analogous to dropping a steel ball through honey to measure how slowly it falls. The second video shows the solid-like behavior of fire ant aggregations. The solid like nature can be see two ways: 1) the ants are maintaining a shape, and 2) when compressed with the petri dish the ants return to their original shape. The Physics of Fire Ants. Inside the ant aggregation the ants grip each other using their feet and jaws.Ants are able to grab onto anywhere on another ants though the strongest connection are foot-foot connections. The Physics of Fire Ants. I am a fifth year graduate student at Georgia Tech pursuing my PhD under Dr. Fernandez-Nieves. My work is in the realm of soft condensed matter physics. I am investigating the material properties of fire ant aggregations, an active system that is both solid-like and liquid-like. Before Tech, I earned my BS in physics from the University of California, Merced. I was in the third incoming class at UCM.

The Physics of Fire Ants. Have you ever been bitten by the ants? Yes, I have. I have been careful and don’t get bitten often. I made it 9 months working with fire ants before I was bitten the first time. Doesn’t it hurt to be bitten? Yes, it does. Fire ants both bite and sting. The sting is worse than the bite. However, personally I would take a fire ant bite or sting over a mosquito bite any day. Where do you get fire ants? We look for open fields usually near on roadsides.
