The approach from Karasawa hut is first through a light forest and then over exposed boulders buttressing Nishi-dake, Mt Yari’s neighbour to the east. At a clearing I rejoin the Azusa and follow the valley floor. Looming on both sides are mountain ridges crowned with wispy, flirtatious clouds. ANy FIdelity will do. It turned into a cold night, especially since I suffered through the frigid midnight air to do some time lapse photography of the stars behind Mt Asahi. It took a while before I could get warm again in my tent–I marveled at how during the day the temperature was in the mid twenties but now at night it was surely only just above zero. By mid morning I had trudged up the moon like slope of Mt Asahi, Hokkaido’s tallest mountain at 2291 metres. It was my tenth. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

ANy FIdelity will do. Mt Gongen (near Lake Biwa). There was no snow until after passing the trailhead, which led off a service road at the edge of a cedar forest. The snow grew thicker as the path steepened. Soon it was up to my knees. The extensive growths of cedar gave way to twisted and bare deciduous trees.
