High school math teacher in nyc interested in school transformation, math for social justice, equity/inclusion and grading reform. More on grading a synthesis of some my favorite thinkers (part one). This is part one of a series I’ll be writing on grading. Guskey, Kashtan, and Reeves. On his blog, Douglas Reeves writes. I know of few educational issues that are more fraught with emotion than grading. Co-founder of Bay Area Nonviolent Communication. Focusing on a shared purpose. Guskey continues to emphas...

High school math teacher in nyc interested in school transformation, math for social justice, equity/inclusion and grading reform. Planning for accelerated precalculus. I’m working on developing the standards for the course, and I’m using the model of “performance indicators” and “learning targets” I grew familiar with when I worked at a mastery-based learning school in New Haven. For background, see the Great Schools Partnership’s document Proficiency-Based Learning Simplified. Short and long versions).

misscalcul8: Remind App
http://misscalculate.blogspot.com/2015/08/remind-app.html
I LOVE the Remind App. And I use it often. I know we've talked about it on Twitter some but it seems like more of my blog readers are not my Twitter friends. I wanted to share how I use it in case someone hasn't heard of it yet. Students just need to text a code to a number (don't need a smartphone or the app). Students cannot reply to me. Students don't see my number and I don't see theirs. No messages can ever be deleted. Every message is saved to your message history. You can have multiple classes.

Not an Ordinary Day. Navigating my way in a Math Classroom. Posted by: River Driver. April 17, 2016. A day outside – and a little trig. Not too shabby at all. Note: yes, I realize this problem is FULL of pseudo-context. Some may rail against it, but honestly it sounded a whole lot better than what’s the width of the parking lot. Plus, as an IB school, a little international flavour never hurts anyone. 😉 ). Laquo; Making Mistakes is Ok! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. You are comment...

Not an Ordinary Day. Navigating my way in a Math Classroom. Posted by: River Driver. April 17, 2016. WARNING: This is not a book review per se (I teach math, not English! So my #MTBoS friends John ( @jstevens009. And Matt ( @mrvaudrey. From the time I started following both of them to finally meeting them last summer at TMC15 I have always been impressed with how they seem to make math fun and meaningful for their students. So when I heard they wrote a book, I had to get it. Of preparing a meal. Again, I...

Monday, June 15, 2015. My Google Forms Idea: CFU Formative Assessments - Show What You Know Standards Review. I have been doing a lot of thinking and reflecting since my students took the CAASPP Interim Assessment and Performance Task and the CAASPP Summative Assessment and Performance Task this year. Although the Assessments were complex and rigorous, I feel that overall my students were really prepared. I am very fortunate to have 1:1 technology in my classroom and so it was important for me to also us...
