Approximately Normal Experiences in Math

Approximately Normal Experiences in Math. Sunday, January 29, 2017. Student Feedback on Student Teachers. Two things happened this week that were pretty impressive to me as a mentor teacher. Early in the week, my projector went out. My student teacher had planned several days' lessons around discovery with our interactive algebra tiles mat. And with algebra tiles in Desmos. That was the plan, but you know Mr. Murphy and that infamous law. Her reaction: No tech? 2) She asked students for feedback EARLY.

Approximately Normal Experiences in Math: Mario's Parabola... Or is it? (with Update)

http://approximatelynormalstats.blogspot.com/2014/07/marios-parabola-or-is-it.html

Approximately Normal Experiences in Math. Monday, July 14, 2014. Mario's Parabola. Or is it? Most of the time my A.D.D. is a huge pain, but tonight it actually gave me a cool idea. Well, sorta cool. Maybe not cool at all. I dunno - you make the call after you read this and let me know if I'm way off base. I'd shown a Dan Meyer. Video today (short and sweet video here. As usual, I didn't close out the tab after I showed it (yes, Joelle. Is it a true misconception or is it lack of drawing capability? What ...

Approximately Normal Experiences in Math. Friday, June 20, 2014. Teaching CCSS-M to Administrators (No, I didn't get fired). While many of you are gearing down for the summer months (or are already enjoying your freedom), my job is kicking into gear. I am sad to be losing my summer (I can hear the sounds from the local pool from my back porch), but at the same time I'm looking forward to working with admins/teachers who are excited to learn new things. Approximately Normal Experiences in Math: Out of the Classroom - Year in Review

http://approximatelynormalstats.blogspot.com/2014/05/out-of-classroom-year-in-review.html

Approximately Normal Experiences in Math. Sunday, May 25, 2014. Out of the Classroom - Year in Review. Lot more than usual. I'm going to set this up "Letterman" style. 5 Online PD Modules. 4 Organizing Resources for Teachers. I know there has to be a way. 2 Meeting with PLC/CLT from K-12. 1 Getting feedback to teachers after visits. I've lost friends over this job and it sucks, but it's reality. However, I have to remember that I know where my heart is in all of this (even if other people don't)....And, ...

High school math teacher in nyc interested in school transformation, math for social justice, equity/inclusion and grading reform. Planning for accelerated precalculus. I’m working on developing the standards for the course, and I’m using the model of “performance indicators” and “learning targets” I grew familiar with when I worked at a mastery-based learning school in New Haven. For background, see the Great Schools Partnership’s document Proficiency-Based Learning Simplified. Short and long versions).

misscalcul8: Remind App

http://misscalculate.blogspot.com/2015/08/remind-app.html

I LOVE the Remind App. And I use it often. I know we've talked about it on Twitter some but it seems like more of my blog readers are not my Twitter friends. I wanted to share how I use it in case someone hasn't heard of it yet. Students just need to text a code to a number (don't need a smartphone or the app). Students cannot reply to me. Students don't see my number and I don't see theirs. No messages can ever be deleted. Every message is saved to your message history. You can have multiple classes.

Not an Ordinary Day. Navigating my way in a Math Classroom. Posted by: River Driver. April 17, 2016. A day outside – and a little trig. Not too shabby at all. Note: yes, I realize this problem is FULL of pseudo-context. Some may rail against it, but honestly it sounded a whole lot better than what’s the width of the parking lot. Plus, as an IB school, a little international flavour never hurts anyone. 😉 ). Laquo; Making Mistakes is Ok! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here. You are comment...

Not an Ordinary Day. Navigating my way in a Math Classroom. Posted by: River Driver. April 17, 2016. WARNING: This is not a book review per se (I teach math, not English! So my #MTBoS friends John ( @jstevens009. And Matt ( @mrvaudrey. From the time I started following both of them to finally meeting them last summer at TMC15 I have always been impressed with how they seem to make math fun and meaningful for their students. Monday, June 15, 2015. My Google Forms Idea: CFU Formative Assessments - Show What You Know Standards Review. I have been doing a lot of thinking and reflecting since my students took the CAASPP Interim Assessment and Performance Task and the CAASPP Summative Assessment and Performance Task this year. Although the Assessments were complex and rigorous, I feel that overall my students were really prepared. I am very fortunate to have 1:1 technology in my classroom and so it was important for me to also us...
