Stone Floor

This floor, above the main gearing, supports three pairs of millstones - two pairs of French Burr. And one pair of Derby Peak. The stones have not been touched but the furniture has been removed for cleaning and repair where needed. The main shaft and its upper bearing has been cleaned of years of accumulated dust and grease. The most common British stones are the sedimentary gritstones, in particular Millstone Grit. The main source of these was the north Derbyshire Peak District.

The Mill is being renovated as part of a larger project to convert it to The Clover Mill. Spa, yoga and wellness centre. Archer’s Mill is Herefordshire’s most impressive and complete surviving example of a late 19th century water-powered corn mill. It is complete, with a rare and impressive trio of matching sets of millstone furniture on the. And, even rarer, a matching trio of bins on the ground floor. These pictures show the unrestored contents of the Hurst. The water wheel bearings need refurbishing, the sprattle beam, its bearers and most of the woodwork is rotten. The pit wheel, mounted on the same shaft as the waterwheel is made of cast iron and is approximately seven feet in diameter. The waterwheel is of all iron construction, approximately 17ft x 4ft (5.18m x 1.3m), with 40 curved metal buckets and a continuous sheet metal sole. The wheel is breast-shot. Working on a minimum head of about 11ft (3.3m). Each bucket holds around 18 gallons of water. No more than one third of the buckets can hold water at any one time.
