Don't hate, Appreciate. I want to introduce you to Arthur Russell. I won't include too many biographical details here. For a brief sketch, read this Sasha Frere-Jones piece, Let's Go Swimming. In the New Yorker (2004). Beloved by many, Arthur Russell's is the best music I have heard in 2009. Love Is Overtaking Me. E other day, I was reading and stopped at the word choice. I stared at it for a few seconds, halfway frustrated with why it stopped me dead in my tracks and halfway befuddled by the way it was ...

Don't hate, Appreciate. English has always been, and frustratingly so, a difficult language for me to comprehend. Perhaps due to my own learning style, I only really began to understand English in my second or third year of studying Spanish - only when we started writing diarios. A friend of mine mentioned yesterday that he glissaded down a hill while mountaineering in Washington state. I find glissade. To be such a pleasant word. Glissade is derived from the French glisser. Well, my first idea was to br...

TRANS-EUROPA EXPRESZ: Magyarország
http://transeuropaexpresz.blogspot.com/2008/08/magyarorszg.html
A window into the world of my tour-de-europa for my friends and family. Tuesday, August 5, 2008. I am so glad to be back to Hungary, bicycling roads I know around Balaton and seeing pieces of my family and my fathers past. After a great night with our German acrobat friends which involved a dry land version of Marco Polo and my first swim in the Balaton, we rode to visit Tamás, Evelyn, Julics, and József- who took amazing care of us! We sat in the bar drinking Arany Ászok, another Hungarian treat, and pl...

Don't hate, Appreciate. Djo:) - the Swedish word for "yes". However, this recognition of other languages and my ability to produce the same sounds has reaffirmed my above mentioned perspective on pronunciation. It seems that the biggest reason that a lot of people I meet don't speak foreign languages is not because they aren't interested, but because pronouncing words is a source of anxiety. The loss of naïveté. And having them correct my pronunciation. Is pronounced with a long a. Or, better put, haa.

Don't hate, Appreciate. I've always believed that by learning a foreign language I have begun to understand the English language better. I think I should probably better acquaint myself with the proper terminology, but perhaps I have embraced my indolence because there's a certain pleasure in referring to the rules of spanish relative pronouns. I recall hearing about the subjunctive. Wouldn't make sense without the subject pronoun I. The sentence reads went to the store. However, Spanish verbs have many ...

Don't hate, Appreciate. Someone with a great interest in film; a more vulgar version is film buff) is a french term that originates from the mixture of two words: cinéma. This weekend at the National Gallery of Art there was an abbreviated film series in Bergman's honor, at which his last film, Saraband. And a portrait of Bergman's life on the Swedish island Fårö, Bergman Island. Were shown today, Saturday. Tomorrow, Sunday, there is one other film, Sunday's Children. In it, Bergman relates,.
