Armchair Asia: Too Hot to Fish
http://armchairasia.blogspot.com/2011/08/too-hot-to-fish.html
Observations on Asia from the banks of the Potomac. Monday, August 29, 2011. Too Hot to Fish. A radio journalist interviewed me today about Japan's putative Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda. I noted it was not much of a surprise as it was signaled for months. Noda is an articulate politician who is respected by business and financial experts with real grassroots origins. He is not a controversial choice. What can you say about a prime minister that wants to be compared to a fish? According to Loach Online.
Armchair Asia: September 2010
http://armchairasia.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Observations on Asia from the banks of the Potomac. Sunday, September 5, 2010. Just in time for the opening of Washington’s political season, Cabela’s. Sale catalog came. Now don’t get me wrong. I do not plan to track, stalk, shoot, kill, gut, skin, stuff, and display any the multitude of Asia policy talking heads who will promote themselves over the next few months. Even if it is open season…. Although the White House does not suggest Green as a source on Obama Asia policy, he was quoted as saying: "The...
Armchair Asia: December 2010
http://armchairasia.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Observations on Asia from the banks of the Potomac. Monday, December 27, 2010. Over 90,000 people, most of them ethnic Koreans, were sent from Japan to North Korea from 1959 onward. The tragedy of this seemingly humanitarian venture is outlined in Tessa Morris-Suzuki’s Exodus to North Korea: Shadows from Japan’s Cold War. ANU Professor Morris-Suzuki draws on recently declassified documents to reveal the covert pressures used to hasten the departure of this unwelcome ethnic minority. Facing uncertain ...
Armchair Asia: November 2010
http://armchairasia.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Observations on Asia from the banks of the Potomac. Friday, November 26, 2010. Very gifted Australian photographer. Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara, the Kan Cabinet’s only member of the arch conservative Nippon Kaigi, on November 23 made an unusual side-trip* while he was in Canberra to ensure his country’s access to Australia’s resources. He visited the Australia War Museum and Memorial. At a press conference. In Canberra with Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd, Maehara said:. There were some 22,000 pe...
Armchair Asia: July 2010
http://armchairasia.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
Observations on Asia from the banks of the Potomac. Sunday, July 18, 2010. Ismene begs King Creon to spare her sister Antigone in the Forum of Paestum. Antigone is a tragedy by Sophocles written before or in 442 BC. Family ties, social mores, and the king's law all clash. Antigone wants to bury her brother Eteocles, while King Creaon has decreed that his corpse be left to the vultures. Antigone disobeys him and gives her bother an honorable burial. Links to this post. That will not do. Washington has its...

Contextual perspectives on the politics and international relations of the US, Japan, their relations, and the rest of East Asia. Tuesday, June 05, 2007. There is a small debate again over at NBR, this time about English in Japan. Perhaps the greatest help for me to get over my frustration over "bad English" was actually written by the editor of www.engrish.com. You will also find that the vast majority of the English examples on Engrish.com were produced by companies - not individuals and that.

Contextual perspectives on the politics and international relations of the US, Japan, their relations, and the rest of East Asia. Friday, December 17, 2010. Well, I've never won lotteries or prizes until today. I came home to a surprise UPS shipment - being the return address was my hometown, I thought it was an early Christmas present from my parents. No, it was from Google! On a lark, I signed up last week for Google's CR-48 pilot program. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Visitors Since October 26, 2007.

Contextual perspectives on the politics and international relations of the US, Japan, their relations, and the rest of East Asia. Wednesday, December 22, 2010. CVS charges $9.99 to take a passport photo. Other companies like AAA and Fedex charge about the same. This is a pure racket. There is a serious discrepancy in pricing when I paid 1/35 what the person in line beside me paid. That's unfortunate for him - but why is it that we are expected to pay so much for exactly the same product?
Colonel Sturgeon: What's Aso to do?
http://colonel-sturgeon.blogspot.com/2009/02/whats-aso-to-do.html
Contextual perspectives on the politics and international relations of the US, Japan, their relations, and the rest of East Asia. Monday, February 23, 2009. What's Aso to do? In his post-Presidency, with low approval ratings, President Bush was offered a job as a greeter at a hardware store in Dallas. With approval ratings in the teens, and 4/5 Japanese disapproving, I wonder what Aso will do. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Meeting with a foreign head of government. Check. Whats Aso to do?

Colonel Sturgeon: Japan gets a flat top
http://colonel-sturgeon.blogspot.com/2009/03/japan-gets-flat-top.html
Contextual perspectives on the politics and international relations of the US, Japan, their relations, and the rest of East Asia. Thursday, March 19, 2009. Japan gets a flat top. The Japanese Marine Self Defense Forces have commissioned the Hyuga, technically a destroyer, and the largest vessel the MSDF have built. Well, it has a flat top, carries up to 11 helicopters, and is very much the same size as the Italian Navy's flag ship, and aircraft carrier, the Giuseppe Garibaldi. Japan gets a flat top.

Japan without the sugar: PM Kan's TV
http://japanlost.blogspot.com/2010/11/pm-kans-tv.html
Japan without the sugar. There ain't no samurai, there are few geisha, Japanese are not the most polite people in the world. In practice, there is no special love or care for nature, nor is Japan uniquely unique. Sorry, but the sugar-coated fantasyland-Japan of Edwin O. Reischauer et al does not exist- if it ever did. Thursday, November 25, 2010. Now gotta go back online and read opinions of what to do about Korea from folks- - many or most of- -whom you just know. Don't know if this "TV" would ever work...
Kintama: Japan Gives Immigrants Money....to go home

Thursday, April 2, 2009. Japan Gives Immigrants Money.to go home. Some of you may have read this story. So, the Japanese invented a way of getting rid of this problem by exporting laborers back to their country, right? Well, this is actually more of a common practice than one my think. Spain. Armchair Articulations - Mike Sansone Thinking Aloud
Mike Sansone Thinking Aloud. How Does the Back of Your Baseball Card Read? Sometimes, during introductions at a church meeting, we trade data. History, job title, family size. Stats not spirituals. Like the back of a baseball card. I’ve had the opportunity to visit churches all across the United States. On weeknights and weekends. In church house, school house, and under tents. Different denominations, worship music, and dress […]. Recent Posts in Faith. How Does the Back of Your Baseball Card Read?

Armchair Asia
Observations on Asia from the banks of the Potomac. Sunday, October 9, 2011. Japan and South Korea always seem worried about how Washington values their alliances. They both believe that Republicans are better friends to these alliances than Democrats. Republicans are less likely to examine the gaps in social and cultural values between the countries in favor of all things security. On Friday, October 7, Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney gave his first major foreign policy speech. And I will ...
