Clearly, the site served as an important religious and political center for thousands of years, but its occupation was most intense and impressive under the Moche. Current research suggests that it was a ceremonial center and an urban settlement dominated by the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, while the plain between the two Huacas was filled with cemeteries and housed a dense residential population.

Architectural Reconstruction

Based on the available evidence, archaeologists have reconstructed the layout of the buildings on platform I. These date to the Huaca de la Luna's fifth construction stage. The platform included an upper level on its northeastern side and a lower one to the south and northeast. Curiously, these areas were not connected and functioned separately.

Moche Origins and Its Territorial Extent. At its apogee the Moche sphere extended from Piura in the north to Huarmey in the south, with the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna serving as the urban and ceremonial center of this vast territory. The loss of prestige by Moche elites and the influence of foreign cultures from the central coast and highlands marked the beginning of the end of Moche society.
