The View from Crookes. Just another WordPress.com site. October 7, 2012. Let’s put a stop to sweaty herds at the Sistine Chapel. I couldn’t agree more with an article. Published in last weekend’s Observer about how crowds of disrespectful tourists are “destroying the majesty” of Rome’s Sistine Chapel. Pietro Citati, an Italian literary critic and biographer writing in Corriere della Serra, has demanded that the Vatican restrict access to the historic site to preserve both the peace and the frescoes.

The options are plenty; and if anything mentioned above appeals to you, type it into the search box below for the people who can point you in the right direction. 1 202 885 1000. The Ju...

Art History for Kids. Welcome to Art History for Kids! Greek Mythology’s Magical Creatures. On: February 13, 2009. As we move away from Egyptian hieroglyphics to Greek mural paintings, we can see that instead of painting scenes of the after life, the Greek preferred to paint scenes of interesting or exciting scenes from their lives. The art no longer is about controlling reality but rather celebrating and sharing special or exciting moments. The Minoan culture was also equally fascinated by nature and du...

February 13, 2015. 1827, by J.M.W.Turner. This lovely monochromatic painting feels so modern. It is actually an oil sketch depicting three distinctly different seascapes, but it reminds me of Rothko, whose color field paintings didn't show up on the scene for another hundred years. Turner was way ahead of his time, ushering in the dawn of abstraction and the breakdown of the form. January 28, 2015. January 11, 2105. January 4, 2015. My favorite painting of the Romantic era, Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog.
