Writings about arthropod ecology, arachnids and academia at McGill University. Arctic reflections (Part 1). August 14, 2013. So many clichés – the Arctic is a vast, stark landscape. In summer, a land of endless days, swarms of mosquitoes and rivers teeming with Arctic char; snowy owls flying low over the tundra; Muskox roaming the lands. The clichés are true. And try to explain why I love it so much, and why Arctic research is my passion. Arctic wolf spider (Lycosidae), genus. Reveals red ‘berries&...

Writings about arthropod ecology, arachnids and academia at McGill University. Do students do better when they write exams faster (or slower)? April 29, 2015. As I was grading my final exams last week, I wondered about ‘quantity’ of answers to written questions as opposed to ‘quality’ of the answer: in other words, some students write a lot of stuff for an answer, but could have received full points on a question without filling a page with tiny handwriting. Here’s what I tweeted about this. This was a g...

Ecology is not a dirty word. Humanities vs Science. 2. Rhetoric. July 19, 2015. Science and humanities are often segregated in education and professional development. Even as a personal interest, the two disciplines are usually considered incompatible. In reality, they are complementary. Imagine if all science degrees included core humanities subjects in the first year? How would scientists, and science, benefit from a basic humanities perspective? This series looks for answers. Book I, Part II. And of c...

What I do here…. Who I am…. A ‘leave-one-out’ function. September 19, 2013. Here’s a little function I often put at the beginning of R scripts in which I’m going to do a lot of cross validation:. Loo - function(data) lapply(1:nrow(data), function(i) data[-i,]). It usually works pretty well just as is, but sometimes needs additional bells and whistles (e.g. K-fold CV). Its also stupid slow for big data sets, but its some nice sugar for most of my CV problems. From → R. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.
