Ascending Cadence Gestures in Tonal Music

Ascending Cadence Gestures in Tonal Music. Thursday, November 13, 2014. Van Eyck series, postscript. While looking through Winfried Michel and Hermien Teske's edition of Der Fluyten Lust-hof. The overall point to be made about this is that van Eyck respects the "downward" focus of the tune by embellishing lower and lower and almost entirely avoiding the register above F5, despite the invitation of the G5 that opens the second half (see *2). Schasamisie vous re veille" (roughly, "Sweetheart, wake up") has four phrases, the third being repeated to make the fourth. See the phrase markings in the theme below. Thus, there are four different versions of the phrase 3/phrase 4 group: (1) in the theme; (2) in the first variation; (3) the very slightly varied version in the second variation, phrase 3; and (4) in the second variation, phrase 4. Ascending Cadence Gestures in Tonal Music. Friday, October 31, 2014. Rising lines in an 18th century contredanse collection. As a follow-up to the recent post on a menuet from the Bacquoy-Guedon treatise (early 1780s), here is a [ link to a PDF file. Here is one of the dances. Note that four figures are specified, which means the music will minimally be played twice in alternativo. Thursday, October 30, 2014. More rising cadence gestures from Bacquoy-Guedon. Dance and Dance Music, 1650-1850: December 2012

Dance and Dance Music, 1650-1850. Monday, December 31, 2012. Gavotte periods from French contredanse sources. In a post on my "Schubert blog" I wrote about the connection between the gavotte, the French contredanse, and the sudden uptick in use of the period theme (term after Caplin) in Viennese music in the 1770s: link to the post. NOTE: links updated 6-09-16]. The first two pieces come from a [ short treatise. In the early eighteenth century, as part of a broad shift away from the half note to the quar...

Dance and Dance Music, 1650-1850: Rising lines in the Playford collections

http://danceanddancemusic.blogspot.com/2014/10/rising-lines-in-playford-collections.html

Dance and Dance Music, 1650-1850. Tuesday, October 28, 2014. Rising lines in the Playford collections. Although rising cadence figures are by no means unknown before the mid-eighteenth century, I was surprised to find that the volumes of John Playford's [English] Dancing Master. Were a rich source for music with rising lines. I have created a PDF essay with examples: link to Playford. Note: link updated 6-09-16]. And here is a sample, "From Aberdeen":. http://danceanddancemusic.blogspot.com/2014/10/more-on-moon-and-seven-stars-calvert.html

Dance and Dance Music, 1650-1850. Monday, October 27, 2014. More on "The Moon and Seven Stars" (Calvert manuscript book). I was surprised to learn that "The Moon and Seven Stars" is a common fiddling tune. I was not surprised to find that the first C# in the final bar of the Calvert manuscript version is very likely a copying error. In notated versions readily available online, the end of both strains is identical: A-D-C#-D. See, for example, Seven Stars. Or listen to David Hansen.

Thursday, January 30, 2014. Figures below are taken from the English edition of Czerny's The Art of Preluding. The "shortest Preludes" all use a 7- 8 figure in the uppermost voice. Notice also that Czerny doesn't bother to express the other half of the old clausula vera. Formula ( 2- 1) in an inner part. The English edition of Czerny's op. 300 may be found on IMSLP: here. Monday, January 20, 2014. A menuet by Mozart, age 9. IMSLP has a facsimile. The design is 8 8, and a repeat sign should undoubtedly be...

Monday, November 26, 2007. This week in football . Almost one week later and still the recrimination and regret rage on. England will be staying home while the 16 other European nations battle it out at the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland next summer. And frankly, despite the 2.5 million pounds salary, who would really want to be England manager? Would things have been different with a different coach? Or do the problems go deeper than that? Perhaps it is time for England to stop regard...
