ASPIES--A place for self-advocacy: November 2006

http://aspies.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html

ASPIES- A place for self-advocacy. Advocacy Support Pride Identity Education. Tuesday, November 07, 2006. Riding the (emotional) roller coaster. The past few weeks have contained some of the peak moments of my life and some of the most crushing, painful ones. The day was beautiful and P was poised and did wonderfully. I don't know if *I* could have done this at age 13 and in the 8th grade. But then the crash. My father is seriously ill. We didn't realize it at the bar mitzvah- in fact, we were all more w...

ASPIES- A place for self-advocacy. Advocacy Support Pride Identity Education. Wednesday, January 10, 2007. Today's Post: Part 2- IEP redux. This morning was my 8th grader's IEP meeting/3 year review. As part of that process, I requested that his psychological testing be repeated. There were no surprises. A 65 point discrepancy between his verbal comprehension and his processing speed subscores. ( 99th percental vs 16th percentile). Today's post, part 1: Thank you. Am I any more disposed to move? No But m...

ASPIES- A place for self-advocacy. Advocacy Support Pride Identity Education. Thursday, November 01, 2007. How do we learn how to learn? How do we learn how to learn? It seems like an odd question to ask. But it's one that I've been mulling over in the context with my younger son. With a learning profile similar to his brother's (and mine, for that matter), he struggles with organizing and consolidating what he knows. In practice, what this means is he has trouble when:. An assignment is ambiguous,.

ASPIES- A place for self-advocacy. Advocacy Support Pride Identity Education. Tuesday, November 11, 2008. Yes, I'm still here, part II. I think those of us on the spectrum are always living close to our outer margins. We use so much of our available resources coping with the sensory barrage and the emotional confusion of the typical outside world, that there is not all that much left. Add illness, stress, or time pressure to that mix, and things fall apart. By late summer, I was a wreck. Two months later...

ASPIES--A place for self-advocacy: July 2008

http://aspies.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html

ASPIES- A place for self-advocacy. Advocacy Support Pride Identity Education. Friday, July 11, 2008. My 12 year old son can charm the rattles off a rattlesnake when he wants to. Other times, he retreats into himself, avoiding confrontation like the plague. He can't remember where he left his backpack/towel/glasses/shoes/book/etc. He gets easily frustrated at the first roadblock of any task. He still has difficulty tying his own shoes. Not too shabby for the kid who was nearly destroyed by 6th grade.

Aspie Chronicles: December 2004

http://aspiebattle.blogspot.com/2004_12_01_archive.html

Diary of the fight for one childhood. Monday, December 06, 2004. Thank you for all your help this morning. Lewis was diagnosed by Doctor Rene Nassan as having a HIGHER ASD, not a basic autistic spectrum disorder. This extreme difference takes into account the higher verbal ability and desire to communicate (however innappropriately) which quantify the higher condition distinct from ASD, and which require different handling. Diary of the fight for one childhood. Sunday, October 23, 2005. Sons, Husbands And Others. Well one particular one of each, anyway; two mine, one not. 10, has joined a forum for gamers. This is brilliant. For the first time I see him rush home from school and beg to check his email. Then I sit patiently through 'how do you spell? Over and over. He wants to write. He wants to spell. He has a passion. When they both post from school, they post from the same ISP. Today he got a sharp warning from the fo...

L: When I grow up I want to save the world and stop them chopping down trees. L: Because we need trees to breathe and they keep chopping the rainforests down and global warming and they said so at school. G: Global warming is about greenhouse gases. G: Best thing you can do is attack the American Burger industry then. Posted by Cheryl at 6:53 AM. Links to this post.

Aspie Chronicles: April 2005

http://aspiebattle.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_archive.html

Diary of the fight for one childhood. Tuesday, April 19, 2005. Imogen is my eight-year-old saving grace. A little odd, for our family, she is amiable, affable, easy going, forgiving, hopeful, friendly, patient and all the rest. She wanders round in her own little cloud of quiet optimism and is the reason that her brother was tested for special needs, instead of the family being tested for hereditary insanity. She's not Pollyanna (thank God, I think I'd puke), but heres an example, today. Imogen has repea...

Aspie Chronicles: March 2005

http://aspiebattle.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_archive.html

Diary of the fight for one childhood. Friday, March 18, 2005. Found out today that my ten year old son had an 'incident' at school yesterday. This is to be expected. He has Aspergers syndrome. But owing to some confusion over the evidences provided to East Sussex County Council. Instead of being statemented in time for the start of this school year, he got a note in lieu, something which does not provide extra funding. Upshot: both kids get detention, in separate rooms. Lewis, as you can imagine, thought...

Aspie Chronicles: September 2005

http://aspiebattle.blogspot.com/2005_09_01_archive.html

Diary of the fight for one childhood. Friday, September 30, 2005. Am I An Over Fussy Mother? My ten year old son is tickled pink - he has found a game on the internet that has him chuckling away out loud. His favourite 'buddies' for this game (as you can 'buy' new buddies without using real money) are George Bush and a large purple Teletubby. Somehow he has opened a whole lot more options for projectiles - grenades, babies etc. Should I be ignoring it until he's bored, or having an apoplectic fit? Got co...

Research & Development

April 27, 2010. For the final project we had one main idea to produce which gradually developed from being about the community to arranging funerals and then about Alan and Brenda Spiers. The documentary shows what is involved when arranging a funeral from the point of view of the cemetery manager and grounds maintenance/health and safety officer. I think that the processes of this production went smoothly. However we did come across some difficulties that caused us to change some dates of filming. Then ...

St Pat’s (1). A Song and Dance for Birdie. Across the Great Divide (and Back Again). A Song and Dance for Birdie. 8221; It seemed like I had a way out. We were able to convince our son to do it by downplaying the notion that he would have to sing and that it would be a fun thing to do with dad. During our first practice where we were learning the songs and some dance choreography, he provided the entertaining observation, “Wait … is this a MUSICAL! Screaming Girls in “Bye, Bye, Birdie”. Ready to Go Home.
