Detecting Saxapahaw: March 2015
http://detectingsaxapahaw.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
Sunday, March 29, 2015. DIV Blog - Day 7: Big Brass in the 11th Hour. Wow, what an ending to DIV week for me! I started out the day working a small camp area with Phil and Josh. We were having some good results, digging a lot of brass and a few bullets. Josh had two wonderful finds - a pair of Maine state seal coat buttons! I did alright, recovering two knapsack hooks and a few bullets. Phil was pulling eagle buttons from that area all day, and got into a fire pit just before lunch. Josh came over to see...

Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Spencer" update - Rare Sharps and Hankins cartridges. It turns out that what I thought were relatively common Spencer carbine bullets are actually much more rare Sharps and Hankins cartridges. This can be seen most clearly on the second bullet from the left in the previous post, and a larger picture of that bullet is shown here. These bullets were designed for the Sharps and Hankins carbine. Carbines and rifles produced for the war, and 700,000 Springfield rifles. The Monitor Cente...

Detecting Saxapahaw: August 2013

Saturday, August 17, 2013. Durham Cannonball Drama (Part 2). Last week I posted about a Civil War cannonball. Recently recovered by a Durham homeowner, which was destroyed by the city's bomb squad. I ended by mentioning that it’s possible that what was found and destroyed wasn’t even a cannonball at all! This may seem like a bold claim, but t. Here are some discrepancies in the news stories that I will point out below to support this hypothesis. Shot-puts, and crane counter-weight. Left) While they bear ...

Detecting Saxapahaw: My First Spanish Silver!!
http://detectingsaxapahaw.blogspot.com/2015/07/my-first-spanish-silver.html
Thursday, July 23, 2015. My First Spanish Silver! I recently took a road trip to do some detecting with the “Pennsylvania Boys”, my buddies Keith and Tracy and my new friend Ethan. It was a beautiful day, although it was blazingly hot in the sun by the end of it. We all had a great time, and came away with a nice pile of relics. We were detecting the site looking for Civil War relics, and we all found quite a few. My favorite is the high-impact Minie ball with the star base clearly visible. Ethan also fo...

Detecting Saxapahaw: June 2015
http://detectingsaxapahaw.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 26, 2015. Last night I posted my recent finds to a number of detecting forums that I frequent. I highly recommend posting your finds on such websites, because the large user base can provide an incredible wealth of crowdsourced historical information on just about any topic. As it would happen, I received an alternate ID for the maker's mark on my silver spoon, and after some more digging (hehe) I believe this to be more accurate. Links to this post. Colonial Silver - Spoils of War? I do hav...

Wednesday, February 11, 2015. Broken Fragments of History. Once again I can't sleep, so once again you get a nice update here at Detecting Saxapahaw! I still have a few more trips to blog about (including a great find back in early January - the suspense! Dustin (R) and myself having a great day in the woods. First up are these two small, flat, brass pieces. The bar and oval each have three attachment holes on either side. Do they look familiar? Regular readers may recall. Next, we have this small, curve...

Saturday, January 31, 2015. Burnside and Me: Stuck in the Mud. Sorry for the long delay between posts. I actually have been out detecting and handful of times since I last wrote, with a few more stories to to tell. But I'm also going through some significant personal life changes at the moment, and simply haven't had time to sit down and properly tell them. I couldn't sleep tonight, so I suppose now is as good a time as any to begin! Detecting in a thick, soupy, mess of sticky brown mud. YUCK! In January...

Wednesday, April 2, 2014. DIV XXVII: Brandy Rock Farm Part 2. The signal that got me down into the ash layer of the fire pit on the first day at Brandy Rock Farm is still a mystery object. It’s a large, flat, and iron, but beyond that I have no idea what it is! Any help would be greatly appreciated! What I do know is that it gave a good signal, and upon digging it out the black charcoal of a Civil War soldier’s fire could be clearly seen. I found the charcoal layer by detecting this iron. thing? The real...
