The following photographs cover Pollokshaws as a whole and are from a publicity board from 1960. The 1957 report also states that there were 120 shops as well as 10 public houses. There is a concierge station which serves these flats and monitors the 24 hour CCTV system. A plan of a typical apartment in this development can be found in Fig34. There are no shopping facilities within the area of Shawhill. There is a toddlers play park and a multi-court play area as well as a social space inside a landscaped area. Fig 4 aerial photograph. Although Pollokshaws was annexed to Glasgow in 1912, photographic evidence from Virtual Mitchell website and Pollokshaws Heritage Group Website suggests that the area continued with the village atmosphere with no large changes to the area Wholesale changes to the area did not occur until the Comprehensive Development Area plans. Pollok could be from the Gaelic Pol which means Pool (the White Cart flows through Pollokshaws and the land here is quite low beside the river) and the word Shaw is believed to mean woodland. (Smart, A. 2002) This would also follow for Shawhill, Woodland Hill, as it was at one point. This describes the area from roughly where the Granary Pub is situated at Shawlands Cross...
