Balsiger Expedition - Everest

At 29,035 feet (8,848 meters) above sea level, this peak, located in Nepal/Tibet, is flanked by glaciers and a particularly treacherous, but coveted climb. Named for Sir George Everest, British surveyor-general of India in the 1800s, it was first successfully climbed on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Nepalese Sherpa guide. This expedition is planned for 2005.

For the Kosciuszko climb report. At 7,310 feet (2,228 meters), Kosciuszko is the highest peak in Australia and is therefore one of the seven continental summits. Located in the Snowy Mountain of New South Wales, midway between Sydney and Melbourne, Kosciuszko is a high moorland summit with little mountaineering interest. The access to the mountain is relatively easy and the roundtrip to the summit can be made in one day.

To read the Khumbu climb report. The Khumbu region of Mt. Everest is highlighted by the world-renowned Khumbu Icefall, which makes this a challenging practice climb for the Balsiger Expedition Team. All climbers attempting to summit Everest from the Nepal side must follow the route thru the Icefall. The route is filled with shifting ice towers and crevasses and is passed successfully using ladders, ropes and a bit of luck.
