設治，始於清治1854年，沈葆禎治台時隸屬卑南廳，1862年總兵吳光亮實施東政十改隸台東州，由徐賢修武員吳立貴，統率清兵五百人駐屯於水尾（現瑞美國小校址）墾荒屯田，成為東台要津，1925年東線鐵路開通，火車站設於水尾西方一公里半處，附近形成聚居之地，水尾自然分為兩個部落，指稱火車站附近為水尾，原來之水尾稱為舊水尾。 日治時政府鑒於此地稻米結穗累累而以日本神社【豐葦原之瑞穗國】的字句將水尾改稱為瑞穗，1937年實施自治，改為瑞穗庄，設庄役場於瑞穗，隸屬於花蓮港廳，直轄瑞穗、舞鶴、鶴岡、奇美、白川、大和等地區。 戰後，設瑞穗鄉全轄區以分十六個村。1946年 花蓮縣. 新設立光復鄉及萬榮鄉行政區域重劃，將大和、大豐、大農三個村劃併 光復鄉. 65292;另紅葉，馬遠二村劃併 萬榮鄉. 訂閱： 文章 (Atom).
