Lighthouse Journal

Sunday, January 27, 2013. As many of you know, we're now the Wardens of Skokholm Island. It's a fantastic place, Britain's first Bird Observatory, home to Britain's densest Manx Shearwater. Colony and largest Storm Petrel. Colony, with 5,000 Puffins. And stunning scenery. We'll be living in the Lighthouse, monitoring the wildlife, running the guest accommodation and trying to reestablish the Bird Observatory. Exciting times! Posted by Rich and Giselle. Lighthouse Journal: December 2012

http://bardsey.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html

Friday, December 21, 2012. Where’s day one you ask? And the Chateau traditionally harbours Alpine Accentors. As the sun rose on our first morning one thing was clear – it was knobbing freezing. But not to be deterred we set out to look for our number one target bird, the majestic, crimson-winged Wallcreeper. High on the cliffs. Conveniently enough, this bird hopped its way towards a Wallcreeper. It was mega. Two hours into our first morning and we’d already nailed two stunning alpine specialists. Which m...

Lighthouse Journal: August 2011

http://bardsey.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

Friday, August 26, 2011. It had already been a decent day, with two Icterine Warblers. And a supporting cast of 120 Willow Warblers. And a Pied Flycatcher. When news came over the radio that another Hippolais. Warbler had been found, and it looked small. We quickly arrived at Plas Withy but had to wait about an hour until the bird finally showed well enough to allow confirmation that it was indeed the second Melodious Warbler. Posted by Rich and Giselle. Thursday, August 25, 2011. Elsewhere the number of...

Lighthouse Journal: November 2011

http://bardsey.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, November 30, 2011. From yesterday returned to the Narrows today but took to feeding on the short grass with the Starlings. To be ringed in the UK. We realise that we're posting quite a lot of Sab's Gull pics, but we can't help it! Posted by Rich and Giselle. Tuesday, November 29, 2011. The last few days have brought appalling weather to the island. Despite this many latest dates have been broken. The Sabine's Gull. On Bardsey, beating last years record of the 19th of November by ten days.

Lighthouse Journal: July 2011

http://bardsey.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, July 31, 2011. The last week has been a very busy one for us with the other staff on holiday and lots of Manx Shearwaters. To monitor. During the day we have been continuing to ring, measure and weigh the Manxie chicks and during the night we have been ringing and recapturing hundreds of adult birds. The Corncrake's. This amazingly delicate Tringa. Is on its way from breeding grounds in Eastern Europe to Africa or way down in the Middle East. From here we headed to Saltholme for rather into t...

Lighthouse Journal: May 2012

http://bardsey.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 30, 2012. The news broke yesterday that Giselle's ringing trainer had caught and ringed yet another MEGA, this time in the form of a Western Orphean Warbler. Luckily Rich was nearby and got on it immediately, but I (Giselle) was birding the gorse at the opposite end of the Island. It was observed flying South across the Island towards the farm, so that's where we gathered. Then the news came that it was back at Nant! Did the Peregrine opt for an unsuspecting Wheatear? Mr Eele's Birding Blog: June 2015

http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Saturday, 13 June 2015. After being delayed we were relieved when the boat company said they were sailing so we headed down to the quay. We were booked onto the all day trip which meant we were landing on Staple in the morning then onto Inner Farne for the afternoon. The trip over was a little choppy but we were fortunate to be sat on the 'right' side and stayed dry. First stop was a brief look at the grey seals hauled out on the rocks before moving to Staple. The birds had no fea...

http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Wednesday, 18 March 2015. Most of the best trips seem to come from a chance conversation and this recent one was no different. We didn't really think he was serious when Roger said 'why don't you come to Uganda ringing? A few months later our flights were booked! Roger recommended a local guide called Harriet (let me know it you would like her details) and things were sorted. She organised all the accommodation, transport, access to the parks, pretty much everything. Titchwell - 2...

Mr Eele's Birding Blog: May 2014

http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2014_05_01_archive.html

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Tuesday, 6 May 2014. After an interesting day ringing at Holme yesterday I offered to go back this morning and help Sophie and Gary with whatever they needed (twitch control, extracting birds etc). By the time I arrived, Sophie had already caught a few birds including the subalpine warbler from yesterday. I did manage to get a few quick shots in the ringing room but the light wasn't great! A great end to the weekend :-). Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). UK - 395, Steppe grey shrike.

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Sunday, 31 August 2014. Even before the report of a white rumped sandpiper on the fresh marsh (heard reports ot was a juv sanderling! I had decided to go into the reserve for the evening. A really good choice as the weather was beautiful. A sit on the main path for a bit gave fantastic views of a juv little stint feeding within 10m of the path with a little group of ruff. Stunning little birds although it was a bit too mobile to get some decent photos. 3 juv little stint. Just as ...

http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Friday, 21 November 2014. The end is nigh! Its now getting towards the business end of the year when it comes to undertaking a yearlist. There are not many species on offer and every opportunity needs to be taken. Before I settled down I had a lovely confiding flock of 11 snow buntings (saw a further 3 during the day) feeding along the tideline. Spent the afternoon in Parrinder Hide going through the ducks and golden plover but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. The w...

Mr Eele's Birding Blog: Fine phalarope

http://mreelesbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2015/05/fine-phalarope.html

Mr Eele's Birding Blog. Wednesday, 20 May 2015. Like most wetland sites along the east coast we seem to be having a very poor spring for waders. So far we haven't recorded a wood sand this year and currently there hasnt been a ruff in May! Black tailed godwits have been non-existent along with dunlin. Water levels have been perfect for the last month so at least that reason can be ruled out ;-). The light was very poor but I did manage to get a couple of poor phonescope. Bardsey Island Apple Introduction

Wales displays two prominent peninsulas: Llyn in the North and Pembroke in the South. Between them is the broad sweep of Cardigan Bay. Two miles out to sea off the tip of the Llyn Peninsula lies Bardsey Island (Welsh name Ynys Enlli). On the island itself are the remains of the thirteenth century abbey as well as a large grave yard. Many people still use the island as a religious retreat.

Bardsey Island News - Newyddion Ynys Enlli

COMING TO AN END OF ANOTHER EXCITING YEAR ON BARDSEY. Only two weeks to the end of 2010! Well, his name comes from Conchobar, an Irish name meaning "Wolf Kin" or "Lover of Hounds", so my guess is he was born within the site of Ireland and they just knew he would love animals - and birds, and fish, and newts, and insects, and plants, in fact all the creatures and living things that can be found on Bardsey Island.
