07.09 The Truth | Belper Book Chat

In the Book Pile. The Truth by Terry Pratchett. August 3, 2009. The first couple of chapters were really difficult. I struggled not so much with the style of writing as the type of humour, as like Sarah, I hate humour that is too obvious – some of the character names for example I found intensley irritating. I enjoyed Williams frustration when he discovered that people prefered the obviously made up stories to his real news. July 23, 2009. Be possible to be objective. That was the (almost) objective part.

In the Book Pile. 0708 The Polysyllabic Spree. The Polysyllabic Spree by Nick Hornby. September 9, 2008. Although not an admirer of Nick Hornby, I enjoyed this book and he has at least inspired us to do this blog. I would have liked less of a bias towards American writers and there were far too many references to his brother-in-law, Robert Harris, the popular (and very successful) writer. I began to warm to Nick Hornby when he stated that Jonathan Coe is the best British writer of his. September 4, 2008.

https://belperbookchat.wordpress.com/literary-leaderboard-2014
In the Book Pile. Literary Leaderboard – 2014. It’s time to recap on the books that we read over the last year. As usual, scores are out of ten and fuller details are given in our reviews for each individual book (see index). Nerds and number lovers will see that the new table not only includes an almost-entirely-made-up attempt to classify by genre, but two extra statistics. As well as the average score, the range of scores is included, where this was recorded. This suggests that. The Song of Achilles.

In the Book Pile. Oystercatchers by Susan Fletcher. June 8, 2009. This took me a long time to read, but only due to my being distracted by other things. In fact, I loved the book and am amazed by the more negative comments above. May 10, 2009. Michele, I can think of Jonathan Coe’s, The Rain Before it Falls but it may not count as the central character is lesbian. April 29, 2009. Irritating, confusing, un-believable, unlikeable characters……. I do understand that sibling ‘rivalry’ can be prett...Some of t...

In the Book Pile. Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. May 2009 Extra Meeting. May 17, 2009. The particular style of mid-Victorian fiction, of a complicated plot reaching resolution by distribution of marriage partners and property in the final pages, was well adapted to the form. In the Book Pile. 0908 The Killing Jar. The Killing Jar by Nicola Monaghan. October 5, 2008. I found this readable and the local dialect added authenticity and credibility to the characters. The metaphor of the ‘sink estate’ with its rife drug use as a ‘killing jar’ worked well. It certainly is a toxic environment where human responsibility and morality cannot flourish. September 18, 2008. September 18, 2008. I also liked the way the ending showed a glimmer of the person Mark had been, the one who looked...

In the Book Pile. Gilead by Marilynne Robinson. December 14, 2008. This was a book which did not have much immediate appeal for me. I started, stopped, and stayed stopped. Until there was no more time, and then I had to read the whole thing in a day. As the book flashed past in a blur all I took from it was a handful of imperfect impressions. In spite of this cavalier treatment the book did have an impact, largely self-referential, which I was reluctant to examine too closely…. Unable to deny the religio...

In the Book Pile. Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh. September 24, 2008. Gosh I can’t believe that the book I found most boring out of all the ones we’ve done recently has got this much discussion going! One of the joys of being in a reading group that we can all have such different view points. I’m still shocked when I come to a meeting having really loved the book and everyone else hates it or visa versa! September 20, 2008. September 19, 2008. For me, his only redeeming quality seems to be his great ability...
