Bee behaviour | Bees in France

http://www.beesinfrance.com/Category/beekeeping-apiculture/bee-behaviour

A foray into the captivating world of apiculture…. Raquo; Bee behaviour. Mild weather brings out the bees. On Jan 27, 2011 in Bee behaviour. Apologies for my recent silence – when the bees are in their quiet season, I get to start my long list of things that don’t get done during bee season. However, I was very pleased to see that in the recent mild weather, all our hives showed some activity as the bees came out to stretch their wings in the sunshine. The bees fight back. On Nov 1, 2010 in Asian Hornets.

Wild bees | Bees in France

A foray into the captivating world of apiculture…. Raquo; Wild bees. On Mar 30, 2011 in Beekeeping. Our wild plums have been fantastic this year – the great weather has meant that we have had a full 3 weeks of sequential blooms getting the bees off to a flying start. On Mar 27, 2011 in Wild bees. Earlier in the season we disturbed a little Ashy Mining bee. So all the bees are out and preparing for the year ahead. The Hairy Footed Flower Bee. On Mar 12, 2011 in Wild bees. What a fabulous name! Which we ha...

Asian Hornets | Bees in France

A foray into the captivating world of apiculture…. Raquo; Asian Hornets. On Nov 7, 2010 in Asian Hornets. This is the photo that ruined my weekend – the sort of sight that strikes fear into any beekeepers heart. Not only are the bees being picked off as they leave or return to the hive by the huge Asian hornets and torn limb from limb, but this one also has a varroa mite – you can see the mite falling off the bee (the brown blob between the bee’s legs) as the hornet gets to work. The bees fight back.

Equipment | Bees in France

A foray into the captivating world of apiculture…. Solar Wax Melter – Part 2! On Jul 20, 2010 in Equipment. OK, so the solar wax melter that I built here. Had a minor design flaw which I found when the sun finally decided to come out. Instead of all my molten wax dripping sedately into my mesh covered ice cream carton, we had a wax landslide. The black inside to the box had done a great job of heating up the metal tray and melting the underside of the lumps of wax comb. Build your own Solar Wax Melter.

Bees in France | Aarrggh! We’re losing a colony…

http://www.beesinfrance.com/2010/aarrggh-we-are-losing-a-colony

A foray into the captivating world of apiculture…. Raquo; Hive problems. We’re losing a colony…. We’re losing a colony…. On Jul 16, 2010 in Hive problems. As there was an opened queen cell, there is the possibility that a young virgin queen had recently emerged but I could see no sign of her. And finally, to add further stress to the hive, wax moth larvae. Could be seen making their way across the base of the comb…. So what to do? After that nature will take its course…. July 16, 2010. We have EXACTLY th...

Allotment Beekeeper: June 2010

http://allotmentbeekeeper.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

A small corner of the Internet about a small corner of a small allotment where some newly arrived bees reside. Wednesday, 30 June 2010. The day after the afternoon before. Not just honey bees, this morning I counted 3 different types of bumble too. Obviously a bee favourite and with the boosted pollination it looks like we'll get another bumper crop this year. More blackberry wine methinks. Yummmmm. On another note, I read the article in the Huddersfield Examiner last night "Did bee sting kill Dewsbury.

Allotment Beekeeper: August 2011

http://allotmentbeekeeper.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html

A small corner of the Internet about a small corner of a small allotment where some newly arrived bees reside. Saturday, 20 August 2011. From this from the super, all capped. Using this to remove cappings. Stick three frames in extractor. Spin until honey stops hitting the sides of the drum. Empty frames with honey extracted go back on the bees to clean out remaining honey and possibly refill :-). Finally honey pours into the bucket for straining into jars! Dont panic yet, Queens are notoriously difficult to find, tho if no eggs or brood next week, then Id ask your BBKA locally if anyone has a spare queen/cell and pop them in! 15 July 2010 at 06:17. Thank you Mrs Dobby. Maureen, my mentor said the same thing. Am a little less panicky now :-). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Logic prevails. Yay!

Allotment Beekeeper: Unexpected results

http://allotmentbeekeeper.blogspot.com/2010/08/unexpected-results.html

A small corner of the Internet about a small corner of a small allotment where some newly arrived bees reside. Monday, 9 August 2010. There was also a dead bee, a decapitated head, some pollen and lot of wax shards but only two mites! Surely that can't be right can it? Can the mites crawl or get blown away? I've looked but can't find the answer. Maybe look into some Vaseline or sparymount or something, obviously something with no insecticides in it, that would be silly! A few puffs of bee tobacco and the...

Allotment Beekeeper: A bit of housekeeping

http://allotmentbeekeeper.blogspot.com/2010/07/bit-of-housekeeping.html

A small corner of the Internet about a small corner of a small allotment where some newly arrived bees reside. Tuesday, 13 July 2010. A bit of housekeeping. And how they had screened theirs I decided that was the way forward. I'd seen some reed screening in one of the local bargain shops but hadn't checked the price, I assumed it would be out of my price range but scurried off to have a look see. Result! 13 July 2010 at 11:20. Mind you, I wish wed been able to get it at that price! 13 July 2010 at 14:16.
