Behind NMR Lines: Is this thing on?
http://behindnmrlines.blogspot.com/2013/11/is-this-thing-on.html
Rantings, ravings, comments, and criticisms from the world of chemistry. Saturday, 9 November 2013. Is this thing on? If you're a regular reader (hello, both of you! You may have noticed a slight gap in the update schedule since, er, July. Since I updated earlier tonight with a short rant. I thought I'd take the chance explain my absence and to engage in some shameless self-promotion. And some news articles for The Conversation. Saturday, November 09, 2013. Wednesday, 13 November 2013 at 01:26:00 GMT.
Behind NMR Lines: #chemclub Roundup 12
http://behindnmrlines.blogspot.com/2013/06/chemclub-roundup-12.html
Rantings, ravings, comments, and criticisms from the world of chemistry. Sunday, 30 June 2013. Once again, here's a roundup of the best of the #chemclub Twitter feed from the last two weeks. (Confused? Will go online early in this week; this unfortunately coincides with the death of Google Reader tomorrow. If somehow you both use this reader and live under a rock, you may need a replacement; personally I'm using Feedly. Which now has a pretty green button on this page. On the blogs, Derek Lowe discusses.
Behind NMR Lines: Punching Up: chemophobia and DHMO
http://behindnmrlines.blogspot.com/2013/07/punching-up-chemophobia-and-dhmo.html
Rantings, ravings, comments, and criticisms from the world of chemistry. Friday, 12 July 2013. Punching Up: chemophobia and DHMO. Has some pointed words for. Chemists about a popular satire of chemophobia: the dangerous and ubiquitous chemical DHMO. It's a pretty popular hashtag. On Twitter and I'm not exempt. From joining in the joke, so Chris' criticism includes me. In brief, his point is that this joke unfairly mocks the uneducated:. The dihydrogen monoxide joke punches down. That are supposedly banne...

Behind NMR Lines: In defense of chemphobia
http://behindnmrlines.blogspot.com/2013/03/in-defense-of-chemphobia.html
Rantings, ravings, comments, and criticisms from the world of chemistry. Monday, 25 March 2013. In defense of chemphobia. One typical response to this is the claim that all matter is chemical! Or something to that effect, accompanied by much eye-rolling. I see the appeal of this response: in the lab, we don't typically discriminate between different materials. They're all chemicals to us. I regularly use water as a solvent and SDS as a catalyst - effectively, I do my reactions in shampoo! By Michelle Fra...

Chemically Cultured: The making of a cover
http://www.chemicallycultured.com/2014/07/the-making-of-cover.html
A view on science communication and its cultural invasion. Monday, 7 July 2014. The making of a cover. I'm on the cover! One of my scientific ambitions has just been fulfilled. Authors use all sorts of ways to demonstrate their work visually. But obviously some fields of research lend themselves more easily to the use of pretty pictures than others. My work with protein interactions was certainly one of these areas. From notebook to TOC. From TOC to cover. Factories churning out all that protein. All the...

A view on science communication and its cultural invasion. Friday, 25 July 2014. To Chemistry World. and beyond! I've started a new gig guest blogging for Chemistry World. Over there I'll be doing that thing where I praise (or poke fun at) academic journal cover art. So head on over there now and check out my first post. About a crazy colour explosion in Chem Soc Rev. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). To Chemistry World. and beyond! Just whos been talking about your work? The making of a cover.

Chemically Cultured: August 2014
http://www.chemicallycultured.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
A view on science communication and its cultural invasion. Friday, 22 August 2014. Are there too many PhDs? A recent competition from NatureJobs. Invited budding science writers to answer the above question. My (unsucessful and somewhat ranty) entry follows. No, there are not too many PhDs. It’s that simple. Can you imagine if everybody in the world studied for a PhD? But is this really practical? The reality of a PhD. The number of PhD students has taken a sharp rise over the last 10-20 years. But w...
Chemically Cultured: November 2013
http://www.chemicallycultured.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
A view on science communication and its cultural invasion. Friday, 15 November 2013. A treasure map in Chem. Eur. J! Avast, me hearties! If there be one thing true 'bout academic journals, it is that there be not enough pirates involved. But lucky for us landlubbers, Chem. Eur. J. Has put that to right with their latest cover. A treasure map! Aye and what a beauty she be. The real excitement, as any good buccaneer knows, is of course in the hunt for treasure. This map takes us from a bislactim-ether.
Not the Lab: March 2013
http://notthelab.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Good science, bad science, and how chemistry can make the world awesome. Thursday, March 28, 2013. Stipends: A waste of funding? A little while ago the subject of teaching assignments came up among some colleagues (as it is wont to do). Specifically, we were discussing which PIs had habits of sticking their students on repeated teaching assignments and which PIs didn't have their students teach unless they really. It was an interesting perspective, and I'm not sure what to think of the philosophy. I've a...
Chemically Cultured: That love-hate supervisor relationship
http://www.chemicallycultured.com/2014/06/that-love-hate-supervisor-relationship.html
A view on science communication and its cultural invasion. Tuesday, 24 June 2014. That love-hate supervisor relationship. I've not even started this blog post yet and you've already got a problem. A mentor, a role model, a leader, a helping hand. These are all terms that could describe that voice of reason encouraging your next step. But when it came to reports and manuscripts, my supervisor always made me see red. Red pen that is. Just wait a minute I'll get on to it soon. Ok I'll move on. I wanted to e...

Behind the New World Order
Behind the New World Order. Exposing the Seedy Underbelly of the Beast. Friday, December 15, 2006. What is The New World Order. I decided to look up New World Order on Wiki and man oh man was I in for a shocker! New World Order (Novus Ordo Mundi) refers to a conspiracy theory. In which a powerful and secretive group is supposed to have created plans to eventually rule the world. As opposed to federal. This is more of what wiki has to say:. Meaning "A New Order of the Ages.". And the Power elite. And enfo...

Behind Nowhere - A pixel art game by Tim Soret & Adrien Soret
Is a huge project that requires a lot of funding, time, and experience. Since the success of our small cyberpunkjam game, The Last Night. We made the tough decision to postpone Behind Nowhere. We decided to make The Last Night a real game first. All the details on our company's website : www.oddtales.net. We are two brothers. We are making video games. A pixel art cinematic platformer. A dark tale with no gameplay interruption. Strange and moody art direction, revitalizing 2D pixel art.
