Sarah Horton, author of Being Sarah. Skip to primary content. The Cancer Culture Chronicles. Is the collected writing of Rachel Cheetham, who died in February 2012, aged 41, of metastatic breast cancer. She was witty and angry, and quite simply one of the best people I’ve ever met. She was my friend. Rachel began her blog in June 2009 after her second recurrence of breast cancer, and continued to write until her death. The book was made available through Blurb. Sarah Horton is Rachel’s friend, a fellow b...

Sarah Horton, author of Being Sarah. Skip to primary content. Is Sarah Horton’s personal story about breast cancer, published in October 2010. Sarah’s honest and forthright opinions on breast cancer have attracted considerable press interest. Why do we concentrate on cure rather than prevention? Is our terror about breast cancer sanitised by the ‘pink’ movement? And will I die? And there aren’t always answers. Is about life, death, questions, options and choices. This true story brings into sharp focus o...

Sarah Horton, author of Being Sarah. Skip to primary content. After the publication of my book, Being Sarah, in October in 2010 I started to blog. About life in the strange period where I wasn’t not a breast cancer patient anymore, but my life certainly hadn’t returned to ‘normal’. Would it ever? I documented my feelings during this period – through depression, more surgery, getting recognised for the book, and finding new friends in the blogosphere – notably Rachel Cheetham and Gayle Sulik. No more nipp...

Scarification? You’re doing it *wrong*. | tastethefireforyourself

https://tastethefireforyourself.wordpress.com/2013/03/08/scarification-youre-doing-it-wrong

In The Mercy Seat. Not *quite* Ready for Prime Time →. You’re doing it *wrong*. March 8, 2013. Yup, that’s it. Nine days after and I’ve two tiny cat scratches on either side and the worst ever. Case of bellybutton scruff. There’s a bit of swelling and bruising yet, but it’s pretty damn minimal. Soreness? Well, I’m not going winter camping just yet, or lifting anything much over 8 pounds, and my belly is definitely tender, but it’s not that bad. This entry was posted in breast cancer. Five to Eight weeks after | tastethefireforyourself

https://tastethefireforyourself.wordpress.com/2013/04/30/five-to-eight-weeks-after

In The Mercy Seat. Not *quite* Ready for Prime Time. Five to Eight weeks after. April 30, 2013. I saw the doctor for my follow-up at 5 weeks, and she said I was ‘healing remarkably well’ and was henceforth cleared to lift heavy things and battle monsters. She also noted that my pathology report had come back showing some abby normal uterine cell growth (focal complex hyperplasia is the technical term; a possible pre-pre-cursuror to cancer), so it was just as well I’d had it out. And overdone at that.

Seven days later… | tastethefireforyourself

https://tastethefireforyourself.wordpress.com/2013/03/06/seven-days-later

In The Mercy Seat. One in a Thousand…. Theatre of Dreams →. Seven days later…. March 6, 2013. It’s an exciting life I lead, I tell you. However, it appears to have done the trick quite nicely. The initial post-operative swelling is already going down; the only major pain I’ve had has been from the scratched cornea; bruising was minimal and is already receding; post operative bleeding was extremely limited; and all other systems are doing *fine*. The other bit is – I feel *better*. One in a Thousand….

In The Mercy Seat. Seven days later…. You’re doing it *wrong*. →. March 7, 2013. I’m dreaming again. And, then, by some miracle, your paint set is restored to you, seemingly intact; all the precious colours, the beautiful fine tipped and familiar brushes that fit your hand just so – it’s been waiting for you all along, and you remember suddenly how much you love it, how precious it is, how wonderful and rich a thing. Old friend, how I have missed you…. This entry was posted in breast cancer. Surgical men...

In The Mercy Seat. You’re doing it *wrong*. Five to Eight weeks after →. Not *quite* Ready for Prime Time. March 26, 2013. Other than that, and the generalized fatigue, everything is going very smoothly indeed – still dreaming, still feeling better *overall* than before surgery, despite the fatigue and residual weakness. This too shall pass – eventually, though it may take six months to a year before enough healing takes place that the swelling on “over-exertion” stops. You’re doing it *wrong*. You are c...

In The Mercy Seat. Seven days later… →. One in a Thousand…. March 3, 2013. My most excellent tenants Hillary and Debbie brought me up to the hospital and dropped me off at the door well before 10:30; I went through the usual registration and thus into the pre-surgical waiting room (where I explained, that, no, I didn’t have anyone with me at the moment, but someone. More quick introductions, two more warmed blankets provided and the old one taken away – all done very discretely so as to preserve my...

8230;especially the metastatic kind. Cancer Gets the Ken Burns’ Treatment on PBS (And Why I Won’t Be Watching It). Whenever I see filmmaker Ken Burns. In the news, I marvel at his eternal boyishness. How can someone born during the Eisenhower administration look no older than 35? Could Burns be some of sort of latter-day Dorian Gray? Is there a film locked in his attic featuring his 61-year-old doppelgänger? Has he ever considered wearing a part in his hair? Is not at least judging by the trailer. From a...

The eye from North Hollywood". Monday, September 23, 2013. So after church, and hoping to have gained some patience and inspiration - I returned to the dreaded 'wall disaster'. I was determined to use ONLY whatever supplies I had on hand.so no more crazy trips to craft stores! I can live with this! Sunday, September 22, 2013. I thought this would be an easy 'fix'.not so! I went to the local Home Depot and bought a little can of white paint. My wall is white. White is white, right? TOO shiny, TOO white!

Living blissfully, simply, and locally. Freshy Fresh from the farm. May 1, 2013. An afternoon’s work picking tomatoes. I think everyone should be required to volunteer on a farm so they can appreciate where their food comes from and the blood, sweat, and tears that truly go into to the art of growing what we eat.
