The Life Abroad

Monday, July 12, 2010. This map nearly killed me. Here are some of the pics from the last few months. This is me sanding away at the wall to prepare it for the paint. This is the part that drove me nuts. Making the organic fertilizer. Monday, August 10, 2009. Everyone was pretty happy about that. So last Tuesday, we all went to a nearby waterpark. And we still have almost half of that money left to buy more English materials for the class. Here are some pics from the past few months:. Singing in the rain.

The Life Abroad: November 2008

http://www.beninelsalvador.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 29, 2008. The volunteer that worked in my site before me just left this week so I´m the only volunteer here. He used to call people beasts all the time, and all the young people say ¨Ben, you´re a beast! Hope everyone is doing well. I´ll try to make the trip to the capital again soon to write another update. Friday, November 7, 2008. So, it turned out to be a great success. About 60 people came and we made about $45, a pretty good sum of money. Me and the two other volunteers at my sit...

Monday, September 15, 2008. I ♥ Peace Corps. I'm here in Washington DC for our initial 2 day orientation and I'm having a blast! Check this out. My job description is to "promote world peace and friendship." Isn't that. Coolest job description ever? Seriously, that is my job for the next two years. When else can you say that your job is to work towards world peace? I truly feel like a superhero. I'll try and upload pics when I can, hopefully I'll do that within the next week. I'll write again soon! I lea...

The Life Abroad: January 2009

http://www.beninelsalvador.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, January 24, 2009. Pictures from the last 2 months. This is me with a scorpion I find in my room. I´ve found a total of 4 so far. My host brother cut off the tail so it couldn´t sting me. This is a pic of me killing a chicken. That´s my host sister helping me do it. I was supposed to cut its neck on the adam´s apple so it would die fast, but I ended up missing it so it took a while for it to die. I felt bad, but maybe next time I´ll get it right. And we still have almost half of that money left to buy more English materials for the class. Here are some pics from the past few months:. Action shot from the soccer tournament. Another pic of me on the volcano. This is me and my nephew eating watermelons. This is me scaling a climbing wall. The record was 25 seconds to the top, but unfortunately, I missed the record by 1 second.

Good Morning Salvador: April 2010

http://goodmorningsalvador.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Tuesday, April 27, 2010. And on to the next thing. Earth Day is over, for which oh, be joyful. Our performance of The Lorax went well despite some last-minute setbacks. Such as three of our Salvadoran child actors not showing up until the last minute, while I was frantically trying to recruit shy replacements from the crowd. Talk about a panic attack! So I'm kicking myself off the computer now. Paz y amor! Sunday, April 25, 2010. So our Earth Day celebration is tomorrow and I can't wait for it to be over!

Sunday, November 29, 2009. Let's go in chronological order.I passed my mid service medical exams this week with flying colors, except I apparently have an intestinal parasite that Peace Corps will not treat because ¨we have tried to treat it before and it doesn't go away.¨ Ummm? Next week I head to a beautiful lake in the crater of a volcano for three days for an English workshop with two teachers from my school. And in two weeks exactly I come HOME for three weeks of vacation! Actually in my village&#46...

Good Morning Salvador: January 2010

http://goodmorningsalvador.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Sunday, January 31, 2010. Many parties and still no running water. Just got back from Playa Tunco, one of the most famous beaches in El Salvador. There we had a goodbye party for one of our group who is going home early because his wife (who was also here with him but is already back in the States) is pregnant! Of course everyone is sad to see this awesome couple go, but of all the reasons to leave Peace Corps early, that has to be one of the best. Friday, January 22, 2010. Monday, February 22, 2010. A reckoning is gonna come. Time to run off and hand out corn and beans! Wednesday, February 17, 2010. Alia Gets Robbed By MS-13. SCENE: On a bus on the way to San Salvador. ALIA dozes in a seat, unable to really sleep because of the blaring regueton music. The bus stops and lets on a clean-cut, well-dressed GANG MEMBER, who immediately sits down next to ALIA. The following dialouge is all Spanish. ALIA (prepared to do anything but not really understanding): What? ALIA (looking ...

Good Morning Salvador: March 2010

http://goodmorningsalvador.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Friday, March 19, 2010. Fiestas patronales, round 2 (or 4). Well, the weeklong festival honoring the patron saint of my village, San Jose (Saint Joseph) ended last night at God knows what hour, and I am officially sleep deprived. Wait, you say, weren't you just celebrating fiestas patronales in late January/early February? Well, yes, but that was for the whole municipality, whose patroness is the Virgin Mary. But I still always feel safe in my village and nearby area (the robbery last year was inevitable...

Monday, August 23, 2010. Alia returns from El Salvador in need of a job! After two years in the Peace Corps in El Salvador, I am coming home October 16. My immediate destination is my mother's house near D.C., but after that, I plan to move to wherever I get a job. That's where you journalist friends and professors come in. I've started looking for jobs on the Internet but wondered if you have any leads - contacts, job bank recommendations or postings you've seen that you could pass on? Our close of serv...

Sunday, September 19, 2010. My replacement volunteer arrived at my site two days ago. She is living with a family that I and the school director set her up with. Her name is Rebecca. She is a redhead so she will probably get more catcalls than me. Thank God. Rebecca seems to love our site. As she should, because it is beautiful. Even compared to the rest of El Salvador. And her host mom is giving her fresh squeezed orange juice every day, which I don't even get. Wednesday, September 15, 2010. Anyway, dur...

http://goodmorningsalvador.blogspot.com/2010/10/perquin-y-pescado.html

Sunday, October 3, 2010. Just got back from a few days in Perquín, which was an ill-timed trip considering how much I have to do to wrap up my service.but was actually a good idea, as I didn't want to leave El Salvador without seeing this place, famous for its natural beauty and civil war history. Hill dotted with bomb holes, and the top afforded us a pretty good view of the surrounding hills and even parts of Honduras. The wall comemmorating the El Mozote victims. From the top of Cerro Perquín. Bruce an...

The Women of Benin. Posted by Steven Williams. On Sep 29, 2016 in My Blog. Benin is home to a lot of beautiful women. While this is not according to global and societal standards, I still firmly believe that this place is a haven for pretty women, inside and out. However, one thing that I really admire about these women is their capacity to live independently. They know how to run a home and raise children and work and what-have-you, without whining to have a man by their side always. They also have the ...
