Tuesday, 27 January 2015. Ecuador- an update on travels. I recently spent three days travelling to some local birding sites around the foothills of the Andes with a great guide called Nelson. We used a mixture of public transport and hitch-hiking to get to three main birding sites, mainly that of Milpe, Rio Silanche and Mashpi. Situated an hour or so away from Quito at 3360 metres altitude, this is a spectacular 1240-hectare reserve which contains a mixture of Upper Montane Cloud Forest, Temperate and Polylepis forest vegetating the sides of steep mountainous ridges. Sunday, 30 November 2014. For about two weeks now, a small Grey Seal pup has taken up residence on Solfach. Usually, Grey Seals don't stay long on this beach, because it tends to get quite a lot of disturbance. At this time of year, however, there are almost no people on the island, besides ourselves. A couple of my favourite close-ups (more further down). Back-lighting with the setting sun works really well with seals, and especially with tame pups such as this one.
