Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study

Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study. Wednesday, 12 August 2015. Things are certainly on the move with migrating birds passing through and gulls returning to their wintering sites. We have had several reports of continental birds already back at Whitehouse Lagoon, Belfast Lough and at Antrim, Lough Neagh. I'll post a short update on the gulls in the next few days. A couple of weeks back, Cameron Moore got lucky and he photographed several colour-ringed Sandwich Terns at Whitehead, Belfast Lough.

The first year bird was fitted with a white ring with 3KNT inscribed on it. Photo by Ronald Surgenor. Ronald's re-sighting is the first since ringing. Many thanks to Ronald for the report and to Camille for the information. We heard back th...

Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study. Gallery - First-winter BHG. Friday, 20 March 2015. First Scottish record for NIBHG. We received an email at the weekend from Brian Henderson in Stranraer, Dumfries and Galloway. Brian had been scanning the gulls at Bishop Burn, Loch Ryan looking for colour-rings, when he noticed one of "our" birds. He managed to get a couple of digi-scoped birds which showed the code, 2AFB. Northern Ireland Black-headed Gull Study. Gallery - First-winter BHG. Sunday, 31 May 2015. Big gulls on CBO. It's a quiet time of year for Black-headed Gulls, still waiting until young are big enough to ring and no wintering birds to catch, so I headed out to Copeland Bird Observatory yesterday to try and catch some bigger (and meaner! The Copelands are home to several thousand pairs of gulls, including this pair of Lesser Black-backs. Photo by Linda Farmer. Many pairs are still on eggs. I also was succe...

Tallaght Gulls + Rings: April 2014

http://tallaghtgulls.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html

Friday, 4 April 2014. April 2014 - Great Black Backed Gulls Gull with Yellow legs! Speedy reply from Scotland. 4th sighting - all by me! 2102 Scottish Ringed Great Black Backed Gull. There were also 2012 Great Black Backed Gull with Irelands' Eye Darvic Rings. Including yet another that is new to me. It is interesting to compare the plumage between the two colonies so the photos I've chosen are as close as possible to the same pose. 2012 Irelands' Eye ringed Great Black Backed Gull. I got a mid week trip...

Tallaght Gulls + Rings: July 2014

http://tallaghtgulls.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html

Sunday, 6 July 2014. July 2014 - Meds about. Lots and lots of Black Headed Gulls in the park this week but the fine weather means a busy park! No foreign coloured rings so far and even 27H0 only making a weekly appearance. The parks of Tallaght have been quiet for rings. I had a week in Kerry where in the fishing ports and at the Fish Factory in Renard Point I got no rings, not even a metal. In Dublin there are meds around at the coast but none yet seen inland. Med Gull at Sandycove. The ring is a BTO Lo...

Monday, 2 December 2013. December 2013 - Another new Darvic and a Caspian Gull! Ballymount Park, Dublin 24 at lunch time today and 18 Mute Swans were out of the water so I got to check for rings. Only one with a ring and again a old style ring with a code that was unfamiliar to me. Again, I hope it will be an interesting report when it arrives from the BTO. Mute Swan ring in Ballymount Park. Tallaght Gulls + Rings: Mute Swan Census - Phase 2

http://tallaghtgulls.blogspot.com/2015/08/mute-swan-nesting-census-phase-2.html

Thursday, 6 August 2015. Mute Swan Census - Phase 2. Received yet another report of Mute Swans with Cygnets in Russborough House in Blessington. Confirmed breeding pair no. 42! Thank you Vincent - yet again. It is proving slow work getting around to sites and then trying to relocate Swans and Cygnets. Parks are easy but waterways, Canals and Rivers are proving difficult. Completed the Peples Garden in the Phoenix Park today. 3 Cygnets first noted 25th May and still 3 Cygnets. 1st Date of Cygnets. These d...

http://birdingatantrimmarina.blogspot.com/2015/08/a-third-winter-starts.html

Ring Watching At Antrim Marina. Sunday, 2 August 2015. A Third Winter Starts. Before I continue, I must give a big thank you to the newly amalgamated Antrim and Newtownabbey Council. The car parking area to the front of the cafe, has now been closed off to the general public, by the placement of a barrier. Therefore, 'Thank You' to the Antrim and Newtownabbey Council for their understanding and permission allowing me access, especially Karen Steele and Ruth Wilson, whom I have been in recent liaisons with.

Ring Watching At Antrim Marina: April 2015

http://birdingatantrimmarina.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Ring Watching At Antrim Marina. Sunday, 12 April 2015. After 36 consecutive Sunday visits to Antrim Marina, my second winter of 'Ring Watching' is complete. For the commencement of my second winter, I decided to start this Blog as a record of my visits to Antrim Marina. I was initially unsure, if I could obtain enough info to make this worthwhile. I therefore decided to expand slightly by recording 'Rings' that I spotted elsewhere. I also strongly believe, that a greater number of Darvic-rung approachabl...

Ring Watching At Antrim Marina. Sunday, 22 February 2015. 2AAJ - On The Move. Arriving at Antrim Marina at 9am, the temperature was reading 2 °. C with a dark sky, raining fairly heavily and a light wind was blowing in from the Lough. The rain finally ceased about 11pm and came on again quite heavily around 12.20. By mid-morning the temperature had rose to 7 °. C and so had the wind, which by then was blowing strongly. Can be found below. I noticed today that 2AAN. Black-headed Gulls Present Today. I had...

The Gunnell's

Guess what Jace inherited from Grandpa Gunnell? Don't be jealous, come visit! Started reading this after Left Behind because I got interested in the last days. It is about what happens after death. I enjoyed it. If you haven't yet, read this book. If nothing else it will make you appreciate your loved ones. 4/15/08 The Education of Little Tree - See Blog. Yes, I decided to finish it and yes I would recommend it. The ending is depressing. The last Crow Indian War Chief. Worth the read. Reading Now The Host.
