Stuck in the Fast Lane. Tuesday, January 1, 2013. I have not maintained this blog since I graduated in May 2010, but feel free to browse the archives or the posts below. Please see also the Daily Sun article from 2010. That gives a nice overview of the world of student blogging at the time that my blog was active. Eight things you won't hear during Cornell Days. The new notable Cornellians. Cornell hockey games of the decade. What is Slope Media doing? Party affiliations of Cornell administrators.

Stuck in the Fast Lane: Hazing: Not Just For Greeks
http://bilmes.blogspot.com/2009/07/hazing-not-just-for-greeks.html
Stuck in the Fast Lane. Wednesday, July 1, 2009. Hazing: Not Just For Greeks. Several days ago, I read this article. About the first day for new cadets at the Air Force Academy after one of my friends from high school, himself entering his final year at AFA, posted it on Facebook. The article is written by a reporter for the geeky site CNET.com, which is not a major news source, but a significant internet site nonetheless. What Happens at AFA. This, of course, was their excuse to loudly, energetically, a...

Stuck in the Fast Lane: What Is Slope Radio/Media Doing?
http://bilmes.blogspot.com/2009/10/what-is-slope-radiomedia-doing.html
Stuck in the Fast Lane. Tuesday, October 20, 2009. What Is Slope Radio/Media Doing? Over three years ago, to much pomp and circumstance, Slope Radio was founded. Slope billed itself as the only student-run radio station at Cornell. (WVBR employs a lot of Cornell students. But its headquarters are off-campus.) With sites like YouTube and Flickr exploding, the time seemed ripe for internet media ventures. That spring, Slope moved into more spacious quarters in Willard Straight Hall. The price of all this e...

Stuck in the Fast Lane: Graduation
http://bilmes.blogspot.com/2010/05/graduation.html
Stuck in the Fast Lane. Sunday, May 30, 2010. I've put my hockey-related thoughts over on eLynah. So I'll focus more on other areas here. For many, graduation is the culmination of four years spent at Cornell. While my Big Red experience began earlier, with Cornell reunions, hockey games, and two years of Summer College. Graduation still represented a clear end. An end to what has been the four best years of my life. I wrote a few weeks ago. For most, though, this journey is immensely rewarding. My one g...

Stuck in the Fast Lane: Party Affiliations of Cornell Administrators
http://bilmes.blogspot.com/2009/07/party-affiliations-of-cornell.html
Stuck in the Fast Lane. Thursday, July 16, 2009. Party Affiliations of Cornell Administrators. Cornell is commonly characterized as a liberal college campus, although I've noted previously that Cornell has plenty of moderate and conservative students, particularly in certain academic departments and organizations. But what about the people running the university? Using publicly available information on voter registrations, and about 30 minutes of my time, I was able to compile the following list. Stephen...

Stuck in the Fast Lane: Does Cornell Have A Complex?
http://bilmes.blogspot.com/2009/07/does-cornell-have-complex.html
Stuck in the Fast Lane. Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Does Cornell Have A Complex? An inferiority complex, that is. The first line of the official Cornell campus tour video. Cornell University is a proud member of the Ivy League. Instead of stating where Cornell is located, or when it was founded, the video announces Cornell's membership in an athletic conference. But as Wikipedia informs us. The Ivy League stands for something more:. As much as we like to laugh at Andy Bernard. It seems that Cornell would rat...

Stuck in the Fast Lane: Sunset Park
http://bilmes.blogspot.com/2010/06/sunset-park.html
Stuck in the Fast Lane. Saturday, June 5, 2010. The phrase is the dedication to Sunset Park. A small lookout point. In Cayuga Heights. While it's a great place year-round, the best time to go would be a tolerably warm evening in late fall or early spring, when you have perfect views of Cayuga Lake, Ithaca High School, Routes 13 and 34, parts of downtown, and Ithaca College. In other words, everything except Cornell. June 5, 2010 at 4:22 PM. I knew Id seen it somewhere with a view [not the slope].
