pneumatic post: no noise, no smell?
http://pneumaticpost.blogspot.com/2015/08/no-noise-no-smell.html
Thursday, August 6, 2015. No noise, no smell? Those garbage tubes are making news again. This time The New York Times. Has published an article on the Roosevelt island tubes, which seem to never cease to amaze. The tubes are painted as noiseless, odorlous invisible labourers sucking garbage at speed, underneath the neighbourhood streets. The collection of house plants, salvaged from the garbage, carefully placed outside the control room. Image my own, from my Stockholm fieldwork of the garbage tubes.

Sunday, June 7, 2015. I am in luck when we arrive at the GlashusEtt. In the Hammarby Sjöstad area of Stockholm, for a group of Italian civil environmental engineering students are being toured around the district and I can join in. The GlashusEtt is funded by the Stockholm water board, testament to the redevelopment of the once industrial area. Saying goodbye to David from Envac. Who has been guiding me around Stockholm’s vacuum waste systems. Our Hammarby Sjöstad tour ends in another processing site, fi...

Thursday, May 28, 2015. Stock(holm) in the tubes. On Monday I had the pleasure of being a guest presenter at the Social Anthropology Department at Stockholm University. To talk about pneumatic tubes. I was invited by Asta Vonderau. Who is doing exciting research on how "the cloud" is culturally imagined and socially negotiated and how it materialises in terms of environmental change. She does fieldwork in previously unexplored places such as the Facebook data centre. I love how George's eyes trail behind...

pneumatic post: October 2014
http://pneumaticpost.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thursday, October 30, 2014. It's my birthday coming up soon and I've received an early present from a very thoughtful gift-giver:. Yes, I now have my own capsule! It sits on my desk at the moment. I can feel its worn-away felt ends, cold metal body, thready canvas details. I can look inside at its rusty insides. The little door squeaks as it moves, a satisfying suck of air and click as it closes completely. These are the sensory and material details of pneumatic tubes which I love. The system is located ...

Saturday, November 8, 2014. Can the use of pneumatic tubes to transport lab samples of a deadly virus lead to wider contamination? This is the fear of some hospital staff where an Ebola patient has been treated recently in Maryland, U.S. Part of Somatosphere's intelligent coverage of the disastrous epidemic, Ebola Fieldnotes.
