Lights, Camera, Action! Every woodworker has this fantasy. You may think you don’t, but believe me, you do. It’s early on that special morning during the holiday season. Cup of coffee in hand, gathered with your pajama-clad loved ones, you wear the sly smile of someone who knows something that the other people in the room don’t. There’s a special someone there, looking for the gift marked for them, but they looked perplexed. I don’t see a gift here for me. Did you forget? But, hey, that’s cool. In fa...

The Shop Monkey | Tom's Workbench

Lights, Camera, Action! Just who is the Trained Shop Monkey? My furry friend Iggy was a gift from my sons for Father’s Day back in 2006. My oldest son came out to the shop to watch his dad work. After a few minutes, I set him up on a section of the shop floor with some scraps, a few quick-grip clamps and a bottle of Elmer’s white glue. When I got back to Florida, I joked with my sons that I had taken the title of trained shop monkey from my oldest. They kids were laughing, and a few days later, we we...

Lights, Camera, Action! February 29, 2012. For a guy known as the Shop Monkey, you’d think that I would have had enough of animals in my shop. But, I’d be remiss if I didn’t tell you about my shop weasels. Some people have gremlins. Others have gnomes. Everybody has that mischievous spirit that runs off with that important thingamabob that you need for your next step in the project, but darned if you can find it. Why can’t I find the right chisel? It was just on my bench right here…. There are other tech...

Lights, Camera, Action! All posts by Tom. I'm the guy who writes the blog. First things first … and this is the last. December 10, 2015. Heck, I even got the attention of sponsors. Companies such as MicroJig, Infinity Cutting Tools, Tormek, Bora Tools, Bell Forest Products. Laguna. Eagle America. Then, I real...

Nine years ago, I was but a wee lad, bright-eyed and bushy tailed full of vim and vigor. Marc Spagnuolo, my woodworking svengali, asked if I would be interested in writing a few guest posts for him. Once I started writing three articles a week for him – and he had only asked for maybe one every two weeks or so, he asked me, “Dude, would you want to set up your own blog? Then, I realized som...

Evolving pieces | Tom's Workbench

Lights, Camera, Action! July 29, 2015. Isn’t it amazing how furniture needs and styles have changed over the decades? Why did these two pieces stand out so much? It’s because in most houses, they are 100% unnecessary. That hasn’t always been the case. Before today’s home with walk in closets that – in some cases – are larger than most bedrooms, people just didn’t have that many clothes. Add to the fact that the average home built today has an extra 1,000 square feet than the average home built in 1973.
