Back to the Body Work. Here is the door with 4 coats of high build primer surfacer, and a mist coat of black base coat serving as a "guide coat" to help during the block sanding in determining between the high and low spots. Here are the fenders before sanding. It was no longer really there. It looks like a much bigger problem than it really is. Metal Work on the Mustang. Here you can see the difference in the mounting location of the "Mustang" fender emblems from side to side. The second photo shows how far off it was mounted when. Here I have determined the control areas of the panel and have attached steel tabs to the surface of the trunk. With the trunk lid laid in place with only the tabs holding it even with the body the best possible fit is revealed. On the left we find a 3/8 inch discrepancy between the panel and the body. The area outlined in black would have to be built up with layers of fiberglass to bring the two surfaces into alignment. Also notice how tight the gap is at the rear as compared to the front. Body Work and Metal Prep. After rolling the quarter panel wheel well flange using a torch, the right quarter panel's body work was able to be completed. The heating up of the metal affects the adhesion of the filler so all torch work must be done first. Work on the Mustang continues. The two black marks shows the area of the offending flange, and the area that will need to be modified. Less than 1 week before deadline/showtime: Spraying the Corvair. Engine compartment into primer. Plan on spending Sunday-Tuesday night re-assembling the engine and transmission in time for Passport to Cherries in downtown Salinas on Wednesday night. Corvair - Tool Box Fabrication. Fabricated a tool box out of what used to be the battery box on the left hand side of the Corvair engine compartment. Plan on relocating the battery up front into the trunk.
