Building, fixing and. Messing about in small boats. Saturday, October 11, 2014. 2014 June Cruise - St. Michaels MD. We drove to St. Michaels, Maryland in mid June for a five day cruise. The weather forecast was for temperatures in the low 60's and lots of rain so I rented a slip at the Harbor Inn. It was also training for the 2014 Watertribe North Carolina Challenge. Scheduled in late September so we didn't bring a motor, relying exclusively on our new oars. A dodger made from a tarp keeps the rain out.

Building, fixing and. Messing about in small boats. Sunday, April 7, 2013. Third reef sailing report. After our spring cruise in the Core Sound last year, I decided to sew a third reef. Into our sail. I finished the improvements in the fall. But didn't get to test it out until our 2013 spring cruise last week at Smith Island in the Chesapeake bay. I had been unsure whether the third reef would be worth the effort and now I have answers to my questions. Tied up after an afternoon sail. Q: Too little sail?

Building, fixing and. Messing about in small boats. Friday, June 21, 2013. Fabric slot top cover for Creamcheese. Slot top cover for a Michalak AF3. For our spring cruise. This year, I made a slot top cover to keep the rain out of the cabin while sailing. The project made me learn about new fasteners and new techniques. Common Sense Fastener installation tool. As usual, Sailrite videos helped a lot. In particular I learned how to make the boot top by copying from a mainsail cover. A Sharpie in Core Sound.

Building, fixing and. Messing about in small boats. Sunday, January 12, 2014. Building two CLC Kayaks. The beauty of boatbuilding. After a lifetime of small sailboats, Julie and I are building two kayaks from Chesapeake Light Craft. I'm still a sailor at heart, but Julie is probably more suited to kayaking. We can envision all sorts of fun combinations of sail kayak. I will build the Shearwater 16. And Julie will build a Chesapeake LT 16. I also made a few light weight saw horses for assembling the panels.

Building, fixing and. Messing about in small boats. Sunday, January 5, 2014. Tulip Poplar for Oars? Our new Core Sound 20, Summer Breeze. Needs a set of oars. After researching various oar designs on the web and comparing the mechanical and subjective qualities of various woods, I've decided to make them out of Tulip Poplar which is cheap and plentiful here in south eastern Pennsylvania. People are surprised when I tell them of my choice so I'm posting my analysis here. Flitch log at Hearne Hardwoods.
