The Kitchen Scientists' Creations

This is a notebook of my non-professional experimental work. It contains experiments and other creative projects which I hope you find helpful. I enjoy giving new life to things most people regard as waste or obsolete. LEGO Mindstorms EV3 features a lot as it is an under-documented but powerful robotics platform. There are some experiments you can do in your kitchen as well but since they are well documented elsewhere I haven't included many of these.

The Kitchen Scientists' Creations: Review: EE Rook

http://blog.thekitchenscientist.co.uk/2015/08/review-ee-rook.html

Well my trusty Orange San Francisco 2 finally gave up after 3 years. Cyanogenmod allowed me to get an extra year out of the phone but the 200 MB of internal memory isn't capable of holding modern apps (there wasn't enough space for even Google Play and Google Maps! But it is stuck on Android 4.04 with no hope of updates. This makes it particularly vunerable from a security point of view. Screen - This is clearly a big cost saver. The screen is bigger than the OSF2 but the colours are washed out and t...

The Kitchen Scientists' Creations: Commanding the EV3 from a Windows PC - part 1

http://blog.thekitchenscientist.co.uk/2015/08/commanding-ev3-from-windows-pc-part-1.html

Commanding the EV3 from a Windows PC - part 1. It would be great if python on Windows could control a LEGO EV3 over bluetooth or USB but it doesn't seem to be reliable or straight forward. I have spent several evenings now with not even a hint of sucess, I just can't connect. Besides the official LEGO software, LeJOS or MATLAB/Simulink there is also the Windows API released to promote Microsoft Surface tablets. The code is available at https:/ legoev3.codeplex.com/. It was easy enough to open the sample ...

The Kitchen Scientists' Creations: Experiment #ABCDEF - Using the LEGO EV3 Windows API to get sensor data - Part 1

http://blog.thekitchenscientist.co.uk/2015/08/experiment.html

Experiment #ABCDEF - Using the LEGO EV3 Windows API to get sensor data - Part 1. The robot I built from the EV3 kit to test the Windows API is fairly simply as you can see in the image below. Rather than trying to control a robot my first project was to simply log sensor data. This is something that was easy to do on Ubuntu and it not possible using the supplied LEGO software. LEGO EV3 Human Interface Device. You will also need a copy of visual studio 2015 community edition and the Windows LEGO API.

The Kitchen Scientists' Creations: Science With Stephen - Viscosity

http://blog.thekitchenscientist.co.uk/2015/11/science-with-stephen-viscosity.html

Science With Stephen - Viscosity. The laboratory where I used to work was having a clear-out of old glassware and amongst the items being thrown away was a set of glass Ostwald Viscometers. Based on the calibration dates some had not been used in nearly 40 years, since they had no value I was able to keep them. This week in Science with Stephen we used these viscometers to answer the question "Which is runnier, sea (salt) water or diet Irn Bru? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile.

The Kitchen Scientists' Creations: EV3 Python - Maze Solv3r

http://blog.thekitchenscientist.co.uk/2015/02/ev3-python-maze-solv3r.html

EV3 Python - Maze Solv3r. The aim of this initial project was to build a simple maze solving robot using the home edition kit. This would enable me to learn about the python library and some of the particulars of bluetooth control. The robot I chose to build was a modified version of the 45544 Educator robot. Colour sensor with forward-facing bumper. The python code assumes the following wiring configuration:. Port B - LH motor. Port C - RH motor. Port 1 - Forward facing IR sensor. If activated and the c...

The KING of the VAPES Blog. Box Mods vs. Mechanical Mods. Figure 1: Box Mods Vs Mechanical Mods. Many vapers who have been into vaping for quite some time are coming to a point where they need to twerk/upgrade their device for better quality performance. It has been a popular discussion in the vape mods scene on what is more preferable, a box mod or a mechanical mod? Because of its ‘box’ feature, a box mod can have electronics that can lower that current usage depending on your setting resulting to minim...

Experiment#3DFAB9 - LEGO EV3 3D scanner. The idea I had was simple - control three motors based on the data from two sensors (colour, touch) and log all the sensor (including rotation) data. Based on this plot the data to show a rough 3D representation of the model. The model I chose to scan first was a 1979 Max Mouse from the LEGO Fabuland series. Model mounted on platform motor. View of other side. I've sucessfully used this in the past to log the motor and sensor data. Platform motor mount end details.
