When I was a little girl, my dad would sing me songs at bedtime. He sang French songs from his childhood and there was one in particular I loved that he would sing every night. The refrain was "gentils coquelicots, mesdames, gentils coquelicots nouveaux". So I asked him, what are gentils coquelicots? And he told me, pretty little puppies. So, I loved my song about the pretty little puppies. Flash forward twenty years. T and I are watching Roi de Coeur. That can't be right," he says. He married me anyway.

The class came to an end and she simply said, "c'est termine.". I was shocked and rather insulted. It seemed so final, so harsh, so lacking in gentleness- so very French in its directness. But, as it turns out, I was a wee bit too sensitive to the word origin as in French, it simply means, we're done. Or, it's over. Gros bisous, E.

Tuesday, September 03, 2013. Yesterday's hike: 4 h 5 min 7.2 mi 1.7 mph. I hiked my twentieth 4000-footer, Mt Waumbek! There's not much exciting about this hike, except for the fact that it's got to be the easiest trail I've taken to a 4000-footer so far. No struggle to get yourself over giant boulders at the top, and as you near the peak it doesn't get significantly steeper. Probably a good thing, since I'm severely out of training. Monday, January 31, 2005. I Need It, But Not That Bad. I judge my need for a vacation by the difficulty with which I get out of bed each morning. I'll let the random hard day slide, but get too many in succession, and I begin to realize that I need a break. I never leap out of bed, ready to face the day.
