Bob Arnebeck's THE SEAT OF EMPIRE: A HISTORY OF WASHINGTON, D.C.

http://www.bobarnebeck.com/swamp1800.html

History Press will be publishing my book, Slave Labor in the Capital: Building Washington's Iconic Federal Landmarks,. On November 18, 2014. The retail price will be $19.99 and the e-book price should be less. History Press, Barnes and Noble and Amazon all currently have a pre-publication discount. Use the coupon code HP10 for your History Press order. You can get more information about the book at my new blog about it, Capital Slaves. The General and the Plan. Why did Washington get it wrong? Growing up...

Children During the Yellow Fever Epidemics

http://www.bobarnebeck.com/children.html

Check out my new blog YELLOW FEVER CASEBOOK:. Historic yellow fever cases in Philadelphia and New York in the 1790's. Realizing that Laurie Anderson's book, Fever 1793, has generated much excitement among younger readers, and that perhaps not a few of the visitors to my web site were inspired by her book, I decided to provide:. A Historian's View of Anderson's Fever 1793. But we can get a better sense of the city at that time, even in regards to the most mundane things like the weather. But maybe not, wi...

Bob Arnebeck's web page on muskrats

http://www.bobarnebeck.com/muskrats.htm

I'm in the throes of revising this page in part because muskrats keep surprising me. Minks stalk and kill muskrats, yet, the other day, as the video clip below shows, I saw a muskrat chase a mink away from a pond. To begin to understand them, I think it best not to emphasize the rat in muskrat. They are rather outdoorsy and when the sun shines on them especially in the winter, they are a splash of beautiful color. Sometimes they build the mounds around trunks of dead bushes. There's a little muskrat poop...

Boom! Power! Watch the Fords Go By, a Dramatic Poem by Bob Arnebeck

http://www.bobarnebeck.com/Ford1903.html

WATCH THE FORDS GO BY. A dramatic poem about the. I wrote this dramatic piece in 1969-70, and it was produced as a play in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1970. It was produced again in Washington, D.C. in 1975. I conceived of the play as having simultaneous action and wrote it originally to suggest that. Thirty years later such a format seems standard for webpages, so perhaps the web is the proper theatre for this play! Here are the portions of the play that I've put on to date:. So Hop In for the Ride!

Dams: the beavers' dams

http://www.bobarnebeck.com/dams.html

Check out my Animal Misbehavior Blog. Check out my other beaver websites. Click a thumbnail:. Beavers can make impressive dams. The tallest I've seen was at least 12 feet high,. And I've seen them maintain a dam 275 feet long. By making a dam, they flood the valley behind the dam, making it easy to swim to trees they want to cut down for food,. Or take logs to a more comfortable place to eat the inner bark that is their principal food. They can also eat the plants that grow in the water behind the dam.

Excrements of Curiosity: Did a Raven Read My Mind?

http://bobarnebeck.blogspot.com/2010/10/did-raven-read-my-mind.html

Friday, October 8, 2010. Did a Raven Read My Mind? After my wife and I bought 52 acres of wild land,. We soon noticed that we were not alone. We often saw huge flocks of ravens over head. We soon learned that one neighboring farmer was also a butcher and too often dumped his waste in a neighboring ravine. We didn't appreciate that, but it did attract the ravens which we soon saw were engaging birds to watch especially when they pair off and perform indescribable aerial dances. It would not take anything ...

Excrements of Curiosity: Less Tanks, More Apple Pie: two encounters with Pete Seeger

http://bobarnebeck.blogspot.com/2014/01/less-tanks-more-apple-pie-two.html

Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Less Tanks, More Apple Pie: two encounters with Pete Seeger. There is something pure about an obituary: facts, garnished with quotes, sprinkled with commonly held assumptions about the obituated's influence, and when it is a non-operatic singer in question, most to the point is how Bob Dylan was influenced, though to be sure, the phrase "influenced Bob Dylan" is all that can be said because who the hell really knows. Mika liked Leslie because she was a good artist and hard work...

Bob's Fall Journal: November 8 to 10, 2004

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2015/03/november-8-to-10-2004.html

Monday, March 9, 2015. November 8 to 10, 2004. November 8 yesterday we made a very brief stop at the land. The Deep Pond dam still leaks and I think the beaver pushed a little more mud up on the dam. No sign of its eating anything along the dam, no characteristic nibbled sticks. I assume that as a newcomer, it might be frightened. Meanwhile up in the poplar groove above the First Pond, the large poplar that had but a few nibbles was about to be cut down. Here is a paper on beavers and white oaks, there o...

Bob's Fall Journal: 1/6/13 - 1/13/13

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2013_01_06_archive.html

Wednesday, January 9, 2013. October 18 to 31, 1997. I wrote this in January 2013 based on hand written notes, videos and photos taken in October 1997, as well as my memory. Saturday I went out with Ottoleo. He saw some animals high on the ridge across from where we always sit at Otter Hole pond when we are waiting for otters. We couldn't decide what they were although there were at least three of them. Otters? Did not look like raccoons with such black fur. Meanwhile no otters appeared in the pond. I hav...

Excrements of Curiosity: Amateurs, Play On! (January 30, 1977, Washington Post Show Section)

http://bobarnebeck.blogspot.com/2014/02/amateurs-play-on-january-30-1977.html

Friday, February 21, 2014. Amateurs, Play On! January 30, 1977, Washington Post Show Section). One Saturday night not long ago while the big political fish were off spawning, Ditte Kaufman threw open her cozy Capitol townhouse and let the Trout run. The musical soiree began quietly enough - a Haydn Quartet and Bach Cantata- and then Norman Irvine lugged a double bass the size of Kate Smith through the front door. At the end of the first movement the crowd let out a shout. Marty Plotkin shook his shou...

Bob's Fall Journal: 1/20/13 - 1/27/13

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2013_01_20_archive.html

Wednesday, January 23, 2013. December 1 to 6, 2003. On clumps of grass just out of the water. All the times I had seen otters on the lodge, I didn't notice them scatting in the grass behind the lodge. Again, I don't think any of the scat was from today, but certainly much was from the last week as I could still see the bones and guts distinctly. They also cut and began segmenting a thin white oak. Some of this scat was wet fresh and probably from today or late yesterday. Down at the upper second swamp da...

Bob's Fall Journal: 12/4/11 - 12/11/11

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2011_12_04_archive.html

Sunday, December 4, 2011. November 25 to 27, 2011. November 25 it warmed up again today. All the snow and ice melted which seemed to make the Deep Pond dam leak. We had 2 inches of wet snow preceded by a quarter inch of ice. The green grasses that grew up at the end of the summer on the last of the pond bottom exposed as the pond water drained through the hole in the dam was getting flooded once again. And I saw where the beaver ignored the larger branches of a honeysuckle for smaller nips. Then I got to...

Bob's Fall Journal: 12/23/12 - 12/30/12

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2012_12_23_archive.html

Thursday, December 27, 2012. October 17 to 31, 2003. It dove with its catch. And, I think, went into the lodge. Not only did it come out again, with the same long swim under water,. That gave me pause and poking it a bit I could see it was not otter scat. Perhaps muskrats have pushed it up, perhaps the cold has blackened the usual slime and algae. The beavers took down another maple tree and I could see cuts on three more. Then one took off on a cruise first going to the west, then toward me, quietly chi...

Bob's Fall Journal: 12/7/14 - 12/14/14

http://arnebeckfall.blogspot.com/2014_12_07_archive.html

Monday, December 8, 2014. October 9 to 15, 2004. October 9 warmth returned then as a cold front moved through a rush of wind from the southwest entranced the trees and raked the ponds. It was not a good day to see anything but robins and smaller birds working the fallen leaves. I did expand the story of the otters somewhat. There was new scat on the New Pond knoll, not fresh, but one large scat dripping over a rock was quite eloquent. No sign of any animals going from Thicket Pond to the East Trail Pond.

Excrements of Curiosity

Saturday, February 20, 2016. Boys of Spring: Leslie's Homage to Dodger Town. Every year from 1974 to 1992 Leslie and I visited my retired parents in Vero Beach, Florida, during spring training. The Dodgers no longer train there but the memory lives on. Photos are great but her drawings on back of plain postcards capture how stars seemed like friends and fields of green grass felt like your back lawn. She didn't get his autograph in 1983; can't remember if it was because Fernando was a very big deal by th...

My Skin Your Skin

My Skin Your Skin. How Beavers Survived the Fur Trade. Tuesday, July 23, 2013. Beavers at the Lachine Rapids. Last time I visited in 2010 it was a goofy little museum geared to 5th graders, Lachine Fur Trade Museum. So one can only speculate how many pelts from dead beavers passed through Lachine. This May I went to check it out. Hiking along the north shore of the river, I saw the lodge nestled on a low bank of a spit of land in a quiet part of the river. The dead beaver was draped near some gnawed logs...
