A Writer's Life: June 2014
http://bobbrooke.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
The trials and tribulations—and joys—of freelance writing. Saturday, June 28, 2014. The Three W's of Writing. Everyone can write. Well, actually just about everyone can put words on paper. But not everyone can be or wants to be a writer. And this is where the three “W’s”—why, what, where—fit in. Why do you want to write? Or perhaps you feel a compelling need to communicate with others. You may have strong feelings on a particular subject and wish to relay them to others. For instance, you may fee...Whate...

The trials and tribulations—and joys—of freelance writing. Friday, April 24, 2015. Getting and Staying Motivated. Well, take heart. There is a way. There are probably lots of times when your head is just bursting with ideas. You can’t wait to get started—but you never do. If that’s the case, you have a problem with getting motivated. To sort things out, jot down as many of those ideas as you can. Look them over and pick three that stand out from all the rest. That’s not the same as being published&...

http://bobbrooke.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
The trials and tribulations—and joys—of freelance writing. Saturday, September 27, 2014. Many writers truly believe that their story has the makings of the next New York Times bestseller, whether it be a messy divorce, their battle with cancer, or the adventure of a lifetime. But most of the time, their story lacks what it takes to make it big. A lot of seniors fall into this category. They feel that because they’ve lived a long life, everything they have to say is interesting. They read me...First, your...

The trials and tribulations—and joys—of freelance writing. Saturday, November 29, 2014. Did you ever wonder why some writers produce an exhaustive amount of material and others very little? The same thing seems to go for songwriters. The answer is complex but usually boils down to the fact that prolific writers do some things that the others don’t. They feed their muses in a number of odd ways. Links to this post. Sunday, November 23, 2014. The Elephant in the Room. Most beginning writers think that if t...

The trials and tribulations—and joys—of freelance writing. Saturday, March 28, 2015. Developing a Voice of Authority. Why is some writing believable and other writing isn’t? What makes the reader believe in some pieces and know that the material is made up in others? The answer to both questions is voice of authority, that sense the reader gets when reading that the writer really knows what he or she is talking about. So how do you become an authority on a subject without years of study? But even if you ...

Saturday, August 16, 2014. SHORT CUTS TO MAYHEM is Released! KNOW a lot of people who won't read short stories. They seem to believe that if a tale takes less than 70,000 words to tell, it somehow isn't worthy. Me? I love shorts stories. I can devour one in a quick sitting when I don't have much time. Like a lovely bite of chocolate between meals. Was released this week, which includes these 16 titles:. Mrs Fanaglio and The Body On The Beach. True To His Country. Showdown At Sundae Gulch. Friday, March 1, 2013. 65279;The Horse Sense of Literature. Heard that the U.S. might soon authorize a horsemeat packing plant in New Mexico, despite recent news stories about alarm bells being raised because horsemeat was found in IKEA's Swedish meatballs and sausage. Americans, it seems, are less adverse to pink slime in their fast food than equine protein. Would have been pretty silly on chickens. There's a good reason no one ever wrote novels with these titles:. You have rattlesnakes, don't you?

Thursday, March 22, 2012. Was in my high school band. Every 3 years, our district participated in a band exchange with another district. We'd travel to the other school for a weekend, do a joint concert and stay in their houses, then they'd come to our area a weekend or two later. Our exchange was with Hewlett High School on Long Island. Talk about culture shock. Their school's population was closer to 700, and at least 600 of them were rich white kids. Takes place during the Great Depression. In thi...

Sunday, May 27, 2012. 65279;Memorial Day Isn't Just For Citizens. Ve put a bit of this story on Facebook the last week, so if you've already read some, I apologize. But here's more of the story. My mom's father was named Guiseppe Ciccocioppo. A mouthful, right? He immigrated here from Abruzzi, Italy in 1912. In five short years, he was a private in the U.S. Army and his messmates were calling him Joe Chicco. Which apparently made the approval process go smoothly. Twenty plus years later, during World War...

Monday, June 25, 2012. 65279;Give Me A Nice Locked Room. Fter the last week, a padded, soundproof cell sounds heavenly. But actually, this blog is about locked room mysteries. Mystery fans know I mean the kind of story where the corpse is found alone in a room with limited access, and that access has been cut off from the outside with a lock or other means. The fun of solving this kind of enigma is figuring out how the murderer got in and back out again. Leroux's The Mystery of the Yellow Room. Christie ...
Elena Santangelo: Cactus For Christmas?
http://elenasantangelo.blogspot.com/2014/11/cactus-for-christmas.html
Tuesday, November 18, 2014. OUBLE CROSS was just released in paperback. This is the third novel in my Twins Mystery Series and the second one where both Gen and Sara play equal parts in the solution. It's one of those novels I drafted ages ago, but only finally figured out how it should work a few years back. Yet another big pull was the local culture, especially the folklore and legends of the indigenous tribes. I'm always a sucker for a great story. A Christmas mystery set in the desert? This is where ...

Sunday, April 22, 2012. Living on the Wind. Ve been trying to write an Earth Day blog all week, but frankly, I keep thinking everything I write will fall on deaf ears. Americans care less about the environment now than they did 3 years ago. Even my friends who are rabid liberals and complain about anti-environment legislation all the time don't seem too concerned about how much energy they waste personally. So today, instead, I'm just going to brag about my electricity provider. I use an average of 231 k...

A Writer's Life
Saturday, March 3, 2018. Beware of the Elephant in the Room. Today, you often hear the phrase “the elephant in the room.” No, it has nothing to do with elephants. But it usually means there’s a subject present that no one wants to talk about. For writers, that subject is whether you’re a writer or an author. What is it about our society that reveres authors more than writers. Aren’t writers and authors the same? Don’t they both communicate with words? Perhaps the idea goes back to when they were in school.

One Disciple's Journey
A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. October 29, 2016. No Church Has to Die. Once there was a worshiping community who was radically devoted to God. They were committed to spreading the Gospel. They were connected in such a way that they called each other brothers and sisters. They even sold their property and possessions so no one in the community would have to live without basic needs. And walls came down! Why don't we have churches like that today? Has God lost His power? Leadership matters in all ...
