The Slowest, Most Beautiful Train Ride. Junko and I really enjoyed our six hour train ride. We had live musical entertainment, fresh local food, cute Sri Lanka boys, and stunning scenery through the hills watching the colorfully dressed Tamil tea pickers. Plus, our train picked up our American friend from Uppaveli so we had a nice serendipity reunion that often happens with backpackers. What more could you ask for less than $3? From → Sri Lanka. Once upon a kingdom a long, long time ago, Sigiriya or Lions Rock was a fortress palace built during the 5th century although archeologists have found evidence of indigenous people from before christ. Supposedly there are over 1,000 steps to get to the flat top area of the rock, but mid way there is a terrace where one can catch their breath or have it taken away when they came in view of the frescoes. Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is part of Sri Lanka’s famous Cultural Triangle. Today I learned how to epoxy charms and I ended up making a bracelet that I’m very proud of.
