Description of the garden
http://bordervale.co.uk/description/index.html
HOW TO GET THERE. Description of the garden. The wooded valley has been planted to enhance the existing mature trees and integrate with the natural flora. At the bottom of the valley there is a bog garden alongside the stream. Great use is made of shade beds in the wood environs and the strategic use of climbers to complement the woodland of predominantly native oaks. Unusual plants and rare varieties are favoured wherever possible. 2009, 2013, and 2014. For an exhibit of Conifers, trees,.

Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on July 21, 2015, in Food. With this year’s blackcurrant crop, we decided to try making a cordial. We loosely followed the recipe for. From the River Cottage book of preserves, though added much less sugar than the recipe suggested. After boiling up the fruit with water, we rigged up a. Hmm, perhaps we do…. Still, we collected about 650ml of strained liquid overnight, to which we added 150g sugar to make our cordial. 18 thoughts on “ Cordial. We hang the m...
Dyffryn in June | hillwards

Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on July 2, 2015, in Garden Visits. Earlier last month, I enjoyed a tranquil walk around Dyffryn Gardens, covering most of the arboretum and more structured gardens. A fine light mist of rain soon dried up in the sultry warmth of the day as we walked. I’ve already shared the fallen blossoms. That captivated me on this visit; here are a few more phone snapshots that I took as we walked around (LO mostly sleeping on me in a sling). I could (and did! Thanks &#...

July | 2015 | hillwards
https://hillwards.wordpress.com/2015/07
Diary of a hilltop garden. Posted in July 2015. Regular visitors to this blog may have noticed that I am particularly fond of purple flowers, and also rather a fan of salvias. In the third year since our purchase at the Malvern Spring Show, Dierama ‘Merlin’ has really found its stride this year. There’s no denying that our terrace could do with weeding: however, the occasional interloper like this one makes me smile. With this year’s blackcurrant crop, we decided to try making a cordial. Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on July 23, 2015, in Flowers. And tagged angels fishing rods. In the third year since our purchase at the Malvern Spring Show, Dierama ‘Merlin’ has really found its stride this year. With no fewer than eight long stems, elegantly arching beneath the weight of pendulous purple bells, this plant is really packing a punch in the garden this year – and I am, as ever, entirely under its spell. Merlin, magician indeed! 6 thoughts on “ Merlin. Our soil is also he...
Of Doubles And Dawn | hillwards

Diary of a hilltop garden. Of Doubles And Dawn. This entry was posted on May 31, 2015, in Flowers. At this time of year every day brings something new to discover in the garden – and this year I’m seeing our garden at hours of the day that I have fervently shunned in the past in favour of a warm bed…. I’m definitely not a crack-of-dawn girl by nature, but on a sunny May morning I can certainly see the appeal of this time of day, when the play of light and shadows in the garden is rather magical. The lemo...

Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on June 6, 2015, in Out And About. I find myself fascinated by lighthouses. Perhaps it’s their physical presence; the quiet strength and simple clean lines that pleases me most. Or perhaps it’s their rugged windswept locations, or even some romantic sense of their history…. Protecting seafarers, with such elegance and style. 4 thoughts on “ To The Lighthouse. June 6, 2015 at 9:54 pm. June 6, 2015 at 9:55 pm. June 7, 2015 at 8:03 am. June 7, 2015 at 9:12 am.

Diary of a hilltop garden. The garden is certainly taking something of a backseat this year… but there have been some changes. There are many plants and combinations that are making me smile in our garden this week. Here are three that have caught my eye – and the camera. In August, the sun rises behind the horse chestnut and beech trees where our garden boundary narrows. Regular visitors to this blog may have noticed that I am particularly fond of purple flowers, and also rather a fan of salvias. Jekka&...

A perennial salvia with dark stems, striking flowers that turn from pink to deep purple, and scented leaves, exclusively available from Unwins Seeds. Buds formed quickly on all three plants, opening into flower over the past week. As expected f...

Diary of a hilltop garden. This entry was posted on June 13, 2015, in Garden Visits. On a recent visit to Dyffryn Gardens, just west of Cardiff, on a fairly dull day, I was mesmerised by the carpet of pink petals strewn across the ground beneath a venerable Cercis siliquastrum, carpeting a lovely set of stone steps. Despite this liberal covering, there was still plenty of blossom left in the tree too. 5 thoughts on “ Strewn. June 13, 2015 at 9:10 pm. That’s very impressive. June 14, 2015 at 10:00 pm.

Tink, Up Close & Very Personal
Tink, Up Close and Very Personal. Wednesday, August 22, 2012. Monday, June 11, 2012. This is how it has been for me the past year. There are not enough umbrellas in the world to cover us from the fall-out of the black clouds that kept following us. When we solved one disaster we were hit with the next one.
