Hvar Town (Sail Croatia Part V). Hvar Town is the “new” town on the island of Hvar. It’s a major international destination, frequented by the rich and famous. We started by pulling up by a small island nearby for our swim stop. The beautiful surroundings never got old. Then it was time to explore the town! The city was completely stone, like several other Croatian cities we’d seen. It also featured a fortress, constructed in the 16th century. Time to climb up the hill to the fortress! Post was not sent -...

Lauterbrunnen Valley, Switzerland (July 2014). The Lauterbrunnen Valley is one of only 3 places in Europe that I’ve returned to (the others being Madrid and Amsterdam). It’s so beautiful and peaceful that I just couldn’t stay away. Check out my post from the summer of 2013. I was staying in Gimmelwald, but I headed up to the Wengen side of the valley for some hiking. I saw some breathtaking views of the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. I admired the hundreds of bright wildflowers along the way. You are commen...

Oslo, Norway (July 2014). I only had 1 full day (2 nights) in Oslo, but I made the most of it. I went to the Folk Museum, which is an outdoor museum of actual authentic old buildings from all around Norway that were carefully reconstructed here. There are even actors in period costume going about their business (chopping wood, fetching water from the well) as if you weren’t there. This is where I learned that Norwegians haven’t always been tall…. And had a look inside a beautiful stave church. You are co...

In and Around Balestrand, Norway (July 2014). On the shore of the Sognefjord, Balestrand is a tiny town with lots to offer if you enjoy being outdoors. I used it as a homebase for hiking and biking. The view from my hostel room. Not bad! There were plenty of beautiful stops along the way where I had a handful of trail mix and read a couple chapters of a novel. This is definitely one of my favorite lookout spots of all time. Made it to Burasi! I hiked up to 575 meters (1886 feet) from sea level. I loved a...

Korčula (Sail Croatia Part II). The next stop on my week with Sail Croatia was the island of Korčula. Before exploring the island, I did a kayaking excursion. We kayaked out to a small uninhabited island with a beautiful white stone beach and views of the surrounding islands. Jumping off the top deck of the ship! I didn’t have the courage to go (yet). Korčula has been inhabited since Neolithic times, and had Greek and Roman colonies, and was under Venetian rule for a long time. Korčula was a great stop!

Stari Grad Hvar (Sail Croatia Part III). The morning before going to Stari Grad, there was a storm, which meant no swim stop. We all took seasickness pills and tried to distract ourselves. Eventually the weather improved as we approached Stari Grad, but my stomach and vision didn’t completely settle for the rest of the day. Thankfully, Stari Grad was beautiful enough to make up for that. 8220;Stari Grad” means Old Town, and this town definitely is that! Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Enter your comment here.

Split’s center is dominated by Diocletian’s Palace (Roman) and the “new town” which is Medieval. The former palace has been converted to a combo of museums, private shops, restaurants, and accommodation. People are always strolling through it, as it should be! Keeping history accessible and alive! What a nice break from the city. Of course you can climb the tower and look down at all the hodgepodge red roofs. What a sight! One comment on “ Split, Croatia.
