CONCRETE to CHICKENS: December 2011
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Friday, December 16, 2011. There are some things that just make you warm and fuzzy during the Christmas season, especially in a small town. Goochland county was having its annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony at the local YMCA, so the Good Wife, the three boys and myself headed down to participate. Then in the distance we could hear the sirens of a fire truck. It wasn't just blowing the siren now and then, it was running them full blast, and they were getting closer! Then we headed over to the craft t...

CONCRETE to CHICKENS: Deer Hunting Starts
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2013/10/deer-hunting-starts.html
Saturday, October 19, 2013. There is an advantage to using a bow, and in Virginia that includes crossbows. The season for bows is the first phase of deer season. Bowhunters get a full four weeks head start before muzzleloader season. That means all the deer are still out and about in the mornings and evenings before they start getting spooked by the shooting and go nocturnal. On a Saturday morning? Oldest Son put a new arrow in his bow in case we came upon the wounded deer. While we were tracking the...

CONCRETE to CHICKENS: June 2012
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 18, 2012. Early May, our black australorp hen decided to go broody. For those that dont know, that means that the maternal instincts are kicking in and she is wanting to hatch some chickies. Except, there are two problems with that scenario. 1 - We dont have a rooster, so none of the eggs the hens have been laying have been fertile; and. 2 - We collect the eggs every day, and once she went broody, she stopped laying. CONCRETE to CHICKENS: March 2012
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html
Tuesday, March 6, 2012. This morning I received a text from my meat chicken co-conspirator. Letting me know that it was starting to look like "Chicken Snow". You may be wondering, "What exactly is Chicken Snow? Which is exactly what I was thinking as I read the text. He was kind enough to follow up with a full definition:. Chicken Snow -n. A snow event in which you accumulate more chickens than actual inches of snow. Once home and in the makeshift brooder, our second annual journey of egg chickens. LOCAL...

CONCRETE to CHICKENS: May 2012
http://concrete2chickens.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 16, 2012. It has been a long time since my last post, but it hasn't been because of a lack of things happening around here. On the contrary, so much has been happening, that by the time the boys are in bed and I have some it to write, I am usually ready for bed myself. Little bundles of fluff! It didn't take long for the chickens to get used to their new home and think they were in the circus on the high wire. They are growing and enjoying the clover in the pasture. Running through the...

For those of you that are not up on your latin or familiar with all the insect species out there, the vespa crabro germana is also known as the European hornet,. Or in central Virginia, also known as the Bell hornet. Either way, they are scary looking creatures. Now Im not one to go looking for a fight, particularly against a creature that has the capability to fight back, but there are several reasons that these buggers have got to go! Probably wo...

Wednesday, October 23, 2013. How to Build an Inexpensive (Cheap) Solar Wax Melter. One thing I did have was a couple small jars of burr comb and left over wax from scraping the frames and working in the hives. It wasn't much, and it didn't look too appetizing. However, lots of things can be made from beeswax, such as lip balm and candles. Although, looking at the wax I had accumulated, I didn't really want to put my lips on it! Qty: 2 - 18-3/8" x 9". Friday, September 28, 2012. Cornish Cross Meat Chickens - Week 4. It was hard to believe when the little yellow balls of fluff arrived, that they would be ready to butcher at seven weeks old, but these wide legged white monsters are growing daily. Looking straight on, they are stocky like a cross between a pit bull and an offensive lineman in the NFL. They are very broad breasted and you can see that they are getting meaty. These do sit around a lot more than the Red Rangers we had last time. Summer has ...
