The pelican briefs

Thursday, September 24, 2015. By design the GOAT is meant to be taken apart quickly and efficiently. It is meant to be reduced to two wings, the horizontal stabilator, the basket and the tail section. The reason for this is that as a glider it can't get far with out being taken to a launch point in the first place. To resolve this issue, we decided to build a trailer that would allow to take it to farther places where to launch. To build this trailer we had to take a few things in consideration. Within 2...

The pelican briefs: We have lift off !

http://buildingthepelican.blogspot.com/2015/03/we-have-lift-off.html

Sunday, March 8, 2015. We have lift off! There is no bigger reward to someones dedicated hard work on a project, than seeing it take flight in the sky in a flawless flight. Yesterday after 9 months since we started this adventure, we finally assembled the "Pelican" super goat ultralight, and took it down the runway for it's maiden flight. It was just wonderful. The order of assembly is simple. wings to the plane, struts to the wing and finally struts to the plane. this order and a little oil on t...Regul...

The pelican briefs: September 2014

http://buildingthepelican.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html

Friday, September 19, 2014. The pelican is here! After a month being build, twenty more days on a ship and a week waiting in customs, finally the Super Goat Kit ( made by M.H. Balogh ) is here! Here are some of the pictures of the kit, still siting at the customs storage facility awaiting clearance from customs (and duties) to enter the country. Crates fresh out of the shipping container. I'll keep you posted as we make progress on the project. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

The pelican briefs: A tale and a warning about CG hook on the GOAT

http://buildingthepelican.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-tale-and-warning-about-cg-hook-on-goat.html

Tuesday, July 7, 2015. A tale and a warning about CG hook on the GOAT. After last weeks tows, we noticed that the tow hook being at the nose of the glider, quickly overpowered the elevator action, bringing down the nose, and stopping the climb. The result of this, was a mild climb angle until the glider got close to 70 meters (With a 200 meter rope) where the climb rate tapered off to nothing. First tow went perfect. The wind was aligned with the runway and the glider got in the air pretty much as wh...

The pelican briefs: October 2014

http://buildingthepelican.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html

Thursday, October 30, 2014. Continuing with the assembly of the goat, yesterday I put together the left wing according to the instructions sent by Michael. The instructions are no more than a page of basic instructions (no pictures). Using the original Mike Sandling goat 1 drawings I was able to figure out most of the assembly. The few things that left me puzzled where answered by Michael (via Jon) that same afternoon. Time ran out, so we stored the wing as it was (all put together with clecos ) on the h...

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider: Struts delight!

http://green-air.blogspot.com/2013/06/struts-delight.html

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Saturday, June 15, 2013. Then it hit me: the wing was a parallelogram. A quick measurement confirmed that, two inches out of square. Loosen all the internal drag bracing, pick one to tighten, and viola now the struts matched up. Took off 6.5" exactly from each aft strut and that was about as close to no washout as I could set it. Only took five hours to make two cuts and drill two holes. And that doesn't include last weekend's setup. Posted by Dan Edwards.

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Sunday, September 21, 2014. Back doing something, anything. How long has it been since I worked on Goat? Almost a year. Woof. I'm not entirely convinced of the upper rear connection, but it's a thing now. Oh, current structure weight is 97.6 lb as measured on the bathroom scale. Flaps, ailerons, ribs, and covering remain. Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider: March 2012

http://green-air.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Saturday, March 24, 2012. Wing loading at 6g. Using the AVL model I gave in a previous post, we'd like the wing loading for say a 6g pull-up maneuver. Say CLmax is 1.5 and load factor is 6 (using gross mass of 305 lb-mass), giving a necessary condition of 80 ft/s (54mph) and -21 deg elevator. At this test case, the trefftz plane shows:. Surface # 1 wing. Chordwise = 10 # Spanwise = 10 First strip = 1. Surface area = 179.309448 Ave. chord = 4.974011. 3 -111640 ...

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider: August 2013

http://green-air.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Saturday, August 24, 2013. Mid 70's in August? The weather this weekend is too nice for me not to put some time working on Goat. And it's only Saturday! I was working earlier this week on making some brackets for the jury struts the other night, but then I realized I drilled them at 3/16" instead of for rivets, so that was frustrating and I quit for several days. Throwing away parts sucks. As a point perhaps of interest, here's a picture of all the bolts remai...

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Sunday, June 24, 2012. Had a day off of work while on travel in Utah and made an appointment to get a hang glider lesson with Steve P. from wingsoverwasatch.com. Only have a few photos, but am sharing what I have. Steve made a GoPro video shot from the left wing. High value from the morning's instruction! Many thanks to Steve P. at wingsoverwasatch.com. Posted by Dan Edwards. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider: Jury struts

http://green-air.blogspot.com/2013/10/jury-struts.html

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Sunday, October 27, 2013. The new bi-metal, 14tpi band-saw blade arrived. Makes a huge difference. Why didn't I invest in a band-saw before? Cuts straight, fast, and the teeth marks less ragged than the old blade. It probably also helps that I spent twenty minutes aligning the blade and making sure the line guides weren't too loose. Now the saw doesn't make tick-tick-tick noises. So I cut a whole bunch of flat parts one weeknight. Feels better too. Weird t...

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider: May 2013

http://green-air.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Building adventures of an Ultralight Glider. Monday, May 27, 2013. A little effort on the aft strut attachments. Drilled the attach points in the forward strut (I'm out of AN3-16's now, so had to put in a bolt order). Also I put the sleeve into the aft strut and put in six rivets per the drawings. Then with some filing, the aft strut can bolt in the correct location with just enough clearance to not rub. I also did the other side, but again with the running out of bolts, it's not put together. The Goat 1...
