Grow With Us: After Derby Day
http://burgonandball.blogspot.com/2010/06/after-derby-day.html
Friday, 11 June 2010. Gardening lore has it that the time to trim topiary is after Derby Day. We're often asked about the significance of this timing - the reality is that it's nothing more equine than that the likelihood of a frost being deemed to have passed - across the whole country. While it's a good rule of thumb, gardeners in milder areas may be able to start trimming well before this day, especially given a warm spring. In hand, to a raggedy bit of hedge I planted a couple of years ago. Burgon an...

Monday, 15 February 2010. Photographic Progress of Winter Salads on Valentines Day. The beautiful new Tomato House (ok it's just a regular greenhouse) has arrived to offer the Burgon and Ball tomato plants protection from sea winds (and hopefully the blight that has afflicted us so badly over the last 3 years). It's a striking design by Hartley Botanic. Who did an excellent job in constructing it in a very difficult location. Friday, 12 February 2010. Progress on Winter Salads. Talking of frost resistant...

Grow With Us: March 2010
http://burgonandball.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Monday, 22 March 2010. It's time to get sowing (a posting from Maria in Sales Admin and her husband Phil). Has spring finally arrived? The woodpeckers in our nearby woods are active - their drumming clearly audible over the sound of the neighbours labouring lawnmowers! The daffodils are late and the tits are still hunting for a suitable nest site. Despite all this seasonal confusion gardening must go on and the seeds must be planted (under glass of course! A note from Phil - whichever word you choose - t...

Thorn Style: January 2011
http://thornstyle.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Wednesday, January 26, 2011. LABELS, LOVELY LABELS . For the past four days I have been making labels. I actually wanted to write this post when I'd finished all the jam jars but the process is much more time consuming than I'd imagined and I have only done half of the sixty jars. Nonetheless I'm very happy with the result so far. Let me talk you through the process:. First, with much enthusiasm, I dragged Sam to Spotlight and we found two types of fabric I liked in the quilting section. Finally Sam came...

Thorn Style: WE'RE JAMMIN'
http://thornstyle.blogspot.com/2011/01/were-jammin.html
Friday, January 21, 2011. One money making venture I have in mind is to sell some of our delicious home grown fruit and veggies at our local organic market. I have even come up with a name which I won't share just yet . With that in mind and an apricot tree over loaded with amazing apricots my husband and I set out to make jam. What started out as a pleasant experience soon became a full scale production line. So with the jam safely in jars I have turned my attention to how to label it. Please don't hesi...
