Wild Douglas County: November 2007
http://kenlassman.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html
Friday, November 30, 2007. Solstice on the Prairie: Baby Bear Moon. The word solstice means sun (sol) stops (stice). It refers to the sun stopping its march south on the horizon where it rises and sets. December 21/22 is the solstice date most years, but there is less than one minute difference in day length for. From Dec. 18 through Dec. 24: 9 hours, 27 minutes. The reason for the seasons is no longer an abstraction after witnessing first hand the sun’s trek along that horizon. Orion’s belt rises ...

Wild Douglas County: Snow Way
http://kenlassman.blogspot.com/2008/01/snow-way.html
Tuesday, January 8, 2008. In December, the local daily newspaper had an article talking about the amount of snowfall we’d received, stating that around 20 inches had accumulated in 2007, the highest in seven years. They went on to say that 2006 had no snow at all, which really got my attention, since I remember that we had snow last winter. It was at that point that it struck me that the reporter had fallen prey to that all-too-common slip-up that the map is not the territory. Of course, the Christian, B...

Brave Voices: Lyrics
http://bravevoices.blogspot.com/2009/07/lyrics.html
Writing, Music and Other Arts By Brave Voice Participants. Saturday, July 11, 2009. The mountainside is unforgiving and the woods are wild. A mining town is no good place for a woman-child. Mama got married when she was fifteen,. 8216;Round here that’s the way it’s done. Wore herself out sweeping up coal dust,. Went to her grave only thirty-one. We hide our lives behind closed doors,. We all pretend there’s nothin’ to know. No one to trust, nowhere to turn, just. Take it day by day and blow by blow, so.

Brave Voices: Thigh Dwellers
http://bravevoices.blogspot.com/2009/05/thigh-dwellers.html
Writing, Music and Other Arts By Brave Voice Participants. Thursday, May 21, 2009. We are the thigh dwellers. Peasant ankled worriers of bathing suite weather. Log-legged and land-locked by Gucci, Vercace, and Calvin Klein. We wish for elephant stampedes. To flatten fashion designers before next year’s line of micro-minis. We are the thigh dwellers. Who purchase nylons according to height and weight. And still must pack our legs in like pork sausage. We are the thigh dwellers. We are the thigh dwellers.

Brave Voices: LOST 9-22-09
http://bravevoices.blogspot.com/2009/10/lost-9-22-09.html
Writing, Music and Other Arts By Brave Voice Participants. Sunday, October 4, 2009. I search the house. Like I’m looking for my keys. She’s got to be in here. She was here just the other day. Round and round I go. Determined to find her. If only the house wasn’t such a mess. I revisit the same places I’ve already been. She’ll be in the last place I look. Round and round I go. Determined to find me. I check the places I’ve already been. If only my life wasn’t such a mess. I know I could find me.

Brave Voices: At Ease
http://bravevoices.blogspot.com/2009/06/at-ease.html
Writing, Music and Other Arts By Brave Voice Participants. Saturday, June 20, 2009. This is not the river, but it is the only photo I have of a river:. With homage to Whitman). Once I was naked. On a rocky river bank. Sweet flesh on granite. Chorus: And I was at ease. And at ebb with the ebb-tide. At ease and at ebb with the ebb-tide. Once I was a stoic. Baking in a summer sun. Squinting at the world. Why am I still. At water’s edge. While fine spokes of light. Glance like shimmering gems. 8221; you ask.
