In the process of eliciting, the teacher can identify how much the sts already know. This will determine how thorough his or her approach will be in the following stages of presenttation. When teaching ‘He’s got a cold’ and various related vocab items, I found that my visuals worked extrememly well in engaging the sts. They were very eager to name what they saw in the visual (a sneeze) and the soaked up new vocabulary items very easily. You can follow any responses to this entry through the RSS 2.0.

Input class with peers. Today I did my first input with peers. We were asked to provide a context for a certain piece of vocaubulary each and to elicit it from each other as a practice exercise. I gave far too much detail when describing the context, thus distracting attention from the main point and failing to elicit successfully. Beware of 1st and 2nd person examples! The third person is always clearer…I realised this when planning how to present ‘He’s got a cold’. Initially I had ‘I’ve got a cold’ but then ran into difficulties when setting concept questions and trying to think about eliciting further examples. Contextualising and eliciting language from students (vocabulary, grammatical structures). It is important to remember that first and foremost is conveying meaning within a context during the presentation process, then comes eliciting, modelling, drilling and the rest of the scheme.
