The Ryan Pick | Polytropos
http://www.polytropos.org/2012/08/13/the-ryan-pick
A blog of twists and turns. A Travelogue of India. I realize it’s not fashionable these days to be. By campaign events, especially VP picks, but Romney’s choice of Paul Ryan has set me at ease. But I was also set at ease because of what the pick means for if Romney. Plus, the propect of a Biden-Ryan VP debate gives me something to actually look forward to in an otherwise hideous election season. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. August 13, 2012. A blog of twists and turns. A Travelogue of India. Thoughts on The Force Awakens. This is not a review. It is a burst of reactions and first impressions. It is rife with spoilers. It has been 32 years since we’ve had a good Star Wars movie or 35 years, depending on your level of Ewok-induced disillusionment. After the prequels, George Lucas led us to believe there would be no more Star Wars movies, and even had the gall to suggest that he never even. He can stop a blaster bolt in mid-air. Response: True,...

Yes, You Still Have to Read the Books | Polytropos

A blog of twists and turns. A Travelogue of India. Yes, You Still Have to Read the Books. Once upon a time, I thought I was going to be that guy. A Song of Ice and Fire. Then early last year the iBook version of. A Game of Thrones. I love me a good fantasy literature conversation. And I also groove on a good aesthetics-of-film-adaptation chat. So it’s been good times lately, all in all, but for those of you who thought like I used to think, I am here to tell you that, sorry, you. A Song of Ice and Fire.

A blog of twists and turns. A Travelogue of India. The Best Of Polytropos. Pardon the stroll down memory lane, but I’m tidying up the blog a little, and thought it would be nice to have a succinct best of list from when I blogged regularly to link to. Here it is. Let me know if you think anything is missing. Stephenson, Pynchon, and Style. The Two Towers Extended. In the Hospital Cafeteria. The Passion of the Christ. The Revenge of the Sith. The Scariest Two Minutes of My Life. August 1, 2012.

Stephenson, Pynchon, and Style | Polytropos
http://www.polytropos.org/2003/10/14/stephenson-pynchon-and-style
A blog of twists and turns. A Travelogue of India. Stephenson, Pynchon, and Style. 8220;Do you seriously think Neal Stephenson is within shouting distance of Thomas Pynchon as a prose stylist? 8221; Friend and reader Christopher DeJong tossed that question my way after reading my review of Quicksilver. Where I briefly compare that novel to. Noting that “Pynchon still holds his ground as a prose virtuoso, but Stephenson has closed that gap considerably.”. Shameful to say, yet, erring upon the side of Conv...

Stomping 'Round Stumptown: October 2008
http://miriam-phx2pdx.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
Monday, October 20, 2008. Sellwood Riverside Park looking north to downtown Portland up the Willamette River. My reading tree at Gabriel Park. Gabriel Park Community Garden. Lake Oswego Public Library. I spend a lot of time here on the internet and renting free DVDs. Tryon Creek State Park. This fairy-tale forest is only 1.5 miles from my house and has lots of winding trails. It also has a nature trail that has rotating art installations. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Stomping 'Round Stumptown: March 2009
http://miriam-phx2pdx.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
Thursday, March 12, 2009. Turning 30 is Sunny and Bright. Because this was such a notable birthday, I decided that I should get out of town and commemorate the occasion in grand style. Going back to Phoenix was the logical choice, considering it was about 40 degrees warmer and I have loved-ones there to celebrate with. Of course, when I arrived, a visit to Cherry Blossom Noodle Cafe was inevitable. Eating mountains of sushi with my parents was just the homecoming I was hoping for. Flying back to Portland...

Stomping 'Round Stumptown: Sauvie Island
http://miriam-phx2pdx.blogspot.com/2009/06/sauvie-island.html
Monday, June 22, 2009. Just a short 20-minute drive in North Portland is a rural riparian area called Sauvie Island. It’s a small stretch of land surrounded by rivers, known for its agriculture and wildlife. One side of the “island” is bordered by the Multnomah Channel, which hosts a village of house boats, and the other side is bordered by the Columbia River, which has pleasant sandy beaches. I took a walk around one of the small lakes on the inner part of the island, and then went strawberry picking.

Stomping 'Round Stumptown: November 2008
http://miriam-phx2pdx.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 2, 2008. The Columbia River Gorge and Mt. Hood. I started by traveling along the Columbia River through the Gorge. The river borders the north side of Portland, across which you can see the state of Washington. As you wander out of town, there are several vistas where you can enjoy the view. Then I turned away from the Gorge and headed south toward Mt. Hood. I traversed farmlands and orchards and enjoyed the warm fall day, although the leaves weren't really changing color yet. View my co...
