Refurbishment of the ATLAS ventilation system. CFD simulations are carried out to study how to improve the ventilation of ATLAS experimental cavern. The goal is to increase the mixing factor and reduce the vertical temperature gradient in the cavern. FCC tunnel ventilation studies. Computational wind engineering activities - CERN topography model.

CFD Software and Hardware tools. HPC (High Performance Computing) computer clusters are essential for CFD calculations. The team uses the Windows cluster at CERN. It contains around 1024 cores and 12 TBytes of RAM which are shared with all users of CERN. All computing nodes are interconnected with low latency interconnect. Is one of the main CFD tool used by the team, completed by ANSYS Icepak. While for meshing a combination of ANSYS Meshing. And Fluent Meshing (former T-Grid) is used.

The CFD activity started in the Cooling and Ventilation group around 1993 when a technical student was appointed to work 100% on these studies. From that time on a number of young engineers (technical students, fellows, project associates, UPAS, trainees) took over this activity spending short to medium periods at CERN. In 2004 when the TS department (today Engineering EN. Department) was created, the CV group.
