65th anniversary of the Nakba. May 16, 2013. A boy with the Palestinian flag at a Nakba parade. Yesterday, May 15th, we commemorated the 65th anniversary of the Nakba, when 750,000 Palestinians were ethnically cleansed from their land and more than 500 Palestinian villages were destroyed by Zionist armies in 1948. This quote is excerpted from a larger piece, which details the Israeli army’s response to yesterday’s demonstrations. Please take a look:. Picture of a key symbolizing the right of return.

Right to life? Not for Palestinians, not even children | Palestine

Not for Palestinians, not even children. May 17, 2013. Yesterday we got a call from the nearby village of Qaryut. Settler attack. The third one this week. Moshka, from the illegal settlement Shilo, takes a picture of the fires he set (Photo by ISM). On Saturday May 11th, settlers from nearby Shilo cut olive trees to make more room for their ever-expanding illegal settlement. They arrived in time to see settler Moshka starting new fires, lighter in hand. The boy in hospital following the attack (Photo by ...

War in the neighborhood. May 22, 2013. Moments after we began chopping vegetables we got word that Isa, a local activist who has been recognized as a human rights defender by the United Nations, had been detained at Checkpoint 56. Isa detained at the checkpoint. The crowd accused the soldier of sexual assault, and whether or not the assault truly happened, the allegations were fuel to a flame. Isa began shouting at the soldiers, how dare they touch a woman. The soldier in question became enraged&...I rem...

A day at the beach. Last Wednesday a few of us traveled to a small village outside of Nablus to celebrate the International Committee of the Red Cross’ (ICRC) 150 years of humanitarian work. In her opening speech, the ICRC spokeswoman explained they had selected this village in particular because of the extreme hardship the community suffers due to the…. May 11, 2013. May 14, 2013. The prisoner detained for six years without trial, Abu Abed, invited us to his home for an interview. We arrived to find his welcome home celebration still in full-swing even three days following his release. Abu Abed: Fears he will be detained again soon. I was taken to the first floor of the home where his mother, I’ll call her Grandma, sisters, sisters-in-law and many sons, daughters, nieces and nephews were playing. I knew many of the children from our day waiting for his rele...In 2010...

Friday morning | Palestine

May 24, 2013. Today I leave Hebron. I was planning on waking up early anyway to catch a service to Ramallah, but not this early. An Israeli army jeep drives through the neighborhood. The roof and window of the checkpoint can be seen in the lower-right corner. At 5:15am the Israeli soldier posted in the checkpoint below our window began to sing. He sang Israeli songs in Hebrew in my overwhelmingly Palestinian neighborhood. Today on their holy day, my neighbors were forced to listen to songs from the occup...

Ma’a salama Nablus | Palestine
https://whatisawinpalestine.wordpress.com/2013/05/18/maa-salama-nablus
Ma’a salama Nablus. May 18, 2013. Today I leave Nablus for al-Khalil (Hebron) in the south of the occupied West Bank. Whereas Nablus is relatively peaceful with most of the violence occurring in the surrounding villages, al-Khalil is a divided city. Segregated city: Palestinians must stay to the left of this green fence. The consequences of segregation and Israeli military presence are perhaps most visible in Al-Shuhada Street. Al-Shuhada Street was once a major thoroughfare and home to Hebron’...I belie...
