Graduation Ceremony | Matt Moores
https://mattstats.wordpress.com/2015/07/29/graduation-ceremony
July 29, 2015. I was very glad that I was able to attend my PhD graduation ceremony in Brisbane last week. My extended family were there to cheer me on, as well as both of my supervisors and my dear friend, Kal. Out of 28 doctorates there were a dozen from maths, including four statisticians. Unfortunately none of us snagged an Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award, but it was nice to be nominated! Brisbane QLD, Australia. From → Uncategorized. Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Visual rhetoric / graph design / R. Rmd to docx collaboration superpowers! July 18, 2015. Introduction: who, why, and how? Who this post is for. This post is for RStudio users who want to use R Markdown (Rmd) scripts to create Word (docx) documents and would like to improve their control of Word styles and document design. I assume the reader has RStudio and MSWord installed but otherwise I try not to skip any details. Why we need Rmd to docx. But R Markdown (v2) has given me collaboration superpowers!

First steps towards reproducible research

Visual rhetoric / graph design / R. First steps towards reproducible research. May 10, 2015. Credibility in computational science. Scientific credibility, especially in computation, turns largely on the success or failure of attempts to reproduce findings. Reproducibility has become a topic of discussion in many disciplines because, as Roger Peng says, “for every ‘X’ we now have ‘Computational X'” (Peng 2013). Kenneth Reinhart and Carmen Rogoff. Anil Potti, formerly of Duke University. We obtain comments...

Visual rhetoric / graph design / R. Readings on graph design. January 16, 2015. Workshop attendees have asked what readings I recommend on graph design. If you were to read just one book on creating effective graphs, I recommend. Creating more effective graphs. Chart House, 2013. C Kostelnick and M. Hassett. Shaping information: The rhetoric of visual conventions. Southern Illinois Univ. Press, 2003. Pages 473 482, 1998. Warranting repeated readings are the well-known works of Edward Tufte. As Kostel...

Visual rhetoric / graph design / R. I’m a part-time con. Sultant and workshop leader in data displays and visual rhetoric, working mainly within the engineering education community. Typically, I work with a client to establish data management protocols and draft preliminary visuals. We discuss what stories emerge and redesign the visuals to better tell those stories. The cycle repeats until our findings are ready to report, present, or publish. R graphics for the absolute beginner. Creating More Effectiv...
