Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: June 2010

http://charingworthorchardtrust.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, June 27, 2010. A Winnie the pooh daydream: bees, drones, queens and HONEY. My bee guru Tanya supervised another peek into my bee colony last week. This is the 'wild' colony that I managed to capture in my bait hive in the 1920s orchard. Since the colony is about to have a population explosion we added another story onto the hive (called a 'super') and hopefully it is from this that we will be able to harvest honey. And check out the suits.(could I bee any hotter? We made some frames to go into th...

Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: March 2010

http://charingworthorchardtrust.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, March 16, 2010. It's spring and the birds are moving in. Two hours ago I took this photo of a red kite flying over the 1940s orchard! What a sign of how successful the Chilterns re-introduction program. Down by the pheasant feeder where they always seem to hang out. It's a red list. Species due to recent population declines that are almost certainly due to the intensification of farming methods. Posted by Henry Johnson. Sunday, March 7, 2010. Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: The surviving orchards of Ebrington

http://charingworthorchardtrust.blogspot.com/2011/10/surviving-orchards-of-ebrington.html

Friday, October 28, 2011. The surviving orchards of Ebrington. Looking down towards Chipping Campden from one of the only old cherry orchards left in this part of Gloucestershire. In this area, it's better to focus on what is left to preserve rather than dwell on what has been lost. In Woodstock. (A 'gribble' is an apple tree that has germinated naturally from a pip in the countryside, in case you were wondering! It is a classic traditional orchard, with all the trees widely spaced on standard rootstocks...

Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire: October 2009

Thursday, October 29, 2009. Grass strimming for biodiversity in the 1920s orchard. Last month I hired this 'DR mower' to make a start at cutting the grass in the 1920s orchard while the ground was still hard. As you can see, five years of growth has left it looking pretty tropical! This 'rank' vegetation is really good for small mammals (and the things that feed on them. And provides cover for all the birds that nest in the trees. However it is largely made up of coarse grasses such as Cocksfoot. Need fe...

Fruitwise Heritage Apples: October 2013

http://fruitwise.blogspot.com/2013_10_01_archive.html

We manage 800 fruit trees, mainly heritage apple varieties, at the orchard we planted in Durley, Hampshire. Thursday, 24 October 2013. Picking the Sturmer Pippin apples. Picked a quarter ton of ripe Sturmer Pippins today, 24th October. It might have been OK to leave them on another week, they are about the last apple we pick, but they were parting from the tree with little difficulty and as this is the last opportunity I have to pick for 5 days and strong winds are forecast, I got on with it. Yesterday, ...

We manage 800 fruit trees, mainly heritage apple varieties, at the orchard we planted in Durley, Hampshire. Monday, 19 August 2013. Late summer 2013 update. Been a funny year, again. The late cold spring means plums and pears lost out again, we will have a few, and the apples are all about 3 weeks late and small due to the severe drought in July. Our light sandy soil does not retain moisture well and we cannot afford to irrigate. Hope to see some of you there. Kind regards to all. Catching up - Again!

Fruitwise Heritage Apples: Sad news, no Apple Day event this year

We manage 800 fruit trees, mainly heritage apple varieties, at the orchard we planted in Durley, Hampshire. Saturday, 7 July 2012. Sad news, no Apple Day event this year. Sorry, we have no option but to cancel the 2012 Apple Day exhibition and sale we usually hold in October at Durley Memorial Hall. When I know what markets we will have any apples for, I'll post a list here. Sorry. 7 July 2012 at 10:50. Sorry to hear about your injury. What a disappointment! Hope you get well soon. 29 July 2012 at 10:17.

Friday, May 29, 2009. Summer is officially here. I work at subway. I will barely be able to pay for rent, let alone school. My roommates are fun, but I'm secretly having a hard time adjusting. I became a little more attached my old roommates than I would have liked. Well, after all is said and done, all of us roommates from Continental are going our seperate ways. That makes me sad, and a little frustrated, which is weird since I'm usually the one who can't wait to get away. It's not that I'm complaining...

Restoring traditional orchards in Gloucestershire

Tuesday, November 22, 2011. Biologische Obstspezialitäten: Swiss organic fruit farming the traditional way. Using the internet to document my orchard obsessions has allowed me to discover fruity wonderlands in far away lands. Recently, I was contacted by Helmut and Monika who manage such a place on the southern shore of Lake Constance. In Switzerland between Romanshom and Arbon. They've generously donated some photos of their farm. And I think you will agree with me that it looks like quite a place!
