This is my mannequin display unit made for Mathers Ice Cream in Brighton’s Open Market off London Road. I was asked by Mr Mathers (or Brett for short) if I could come up with an eye-catching display unit for his homemade fudge and chocolate. Funnily enough I already had an idea for a mannequin display modelled on the old usherettes from the early days of cinema and I had been waiting for the right opportunity to unleash it! Brett was open to cool and unusual ideas, which is always great for a designer!

This chair was made from scrap items you could find abandoned across the country. It was made for Louise on ‘Fill Your House for Free’. I used a packing crate, a heavy duty wooden pallet, a smaller wooden pallet, some OSB offcuts and unwanted material. In the last pic you can see the old unwanted mattress I cut for the cushioned pads to make this a really comfy little chair. This is a pretty simple make – a good one to begin up-cycling with shall we say? All you need are some old forks – I used silver ones as they look nice, although they can be pretty tough to bend without getting a kink. They have a handle that tapers in and where it tapers in it will want to bend, not necessarily where you want it! Find yourself a vintage suitcase and get busy! The one I have here is pretty sturdy and has a hard backing, so there was no need to strengthen it. If yours is too flimsy to hold the weight of the shelves you may want to think about a hard backing. I used old tea crates to create this rather fab bath panel. First I cut the sides of the tea crates out using a grinder. When I had enough I attached them to the original (and rather nasty) bath panel and sealed them with an outdoor weatherproof varnish to make sure all my hard work didn’t go soggy! I then fitted the bath panel, attached the end piece and used one of the metal straps from the tea crate to seal the corner. Now I want one for myself! Fill Your House for Free.
