A Mathematician's Sociology: You Better You Bet
http://a-mathematicians-theology.blogspot.com/2014/03/you-better-you-bet.html
Random thoughts from a random fellow. Tuesday, March 11, 2014. You Better You Bet. This one is due to Marcus de Sautoy but it came up last night again. It's the ultimate insult to a mathematician, the one that makes you reach for your gun. Don't say "it's not rigorous". If you say "It's not elegant" then we can argue or we can admit "yeah it's not really, maybe we can find a neater way". (Or just "heigh-ho".). If you say "It's not useful", we say "so what, who cares? Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Random thoughts from a random fellow. Wednesday, October 07, 2015. Get Off My Cloud. See when you belong to a "certain category" you are expected to sort everything out yourself, and someone will make that very clear to you. But when you are in "another category" you don't have to, you can tell that same someone who will tell someone else to send something on your behalf. Links to this post. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). A Mathematician's Sociology: January 2013
http://a-mathematicians-theology.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Random thoughts from a random fellow. Thursday, January 24, 2013. Except it isn't available. Used to be that libraries were quiet places. A respite to ponder, read, browse in peace. The customers are no better. Seems like the library is a place to meet your mates for a conversation. Why not go to the coffee shop? And when the assistants are helping customers, it would be good if the customers went up to the desk, particularly if they're a bit deaf, so that the conversation could be quiet?

A Mathematician's Sociology: February 2014
http://a-mathematicians-theology.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html
Random thoughts from a random fellow. Thursday, February 06, 2014. Once upon a time, there was a magical kingdom with a beautiful princess. Truly life was wonderful. What a lucky girl she was. Some of her friends asked why she was so lucky, but she didn't know. But it didn't bother her. She just looked forward to the next exciting adventure. Would it be a meeting with a prince? A magic carpet ride? So long as it was lovely she didn't mind. Every day should be like this. Links to this post.

The DJY Chess Blog: Is it just a waste of time?
http://djychess.blogspot.com/2016/12/is-it-just-waste-of-time.html
The DJY Chess Blog. Growing pains of a chess amateur. Monday, 26 December 2016. Is it just a waste of time? The reader might have noticed the dearth of games for Wallington lately. My experiences as captain last season didn't make it any harder to take a step back, but we also took voluntary relegation owing to a loss of members, and above all I've become fed up with playing on weeknights. This game shows why. All of eight months ago! That's why I'm in two minds about playing the Botvinnik; I still have ...
